Rear threw axle and trainers versus road

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rear threw axle and trainers versus road

I have a trek Domane that I ride on the road and on kicker snap . I changed the rear threw axel to be compatible with the trainer and use the same threw axle when riding outside. Am I damaging anything by doing this? Should I be switching the threw axle all the time depending where I’m riding - trainer versus road? That’s a hassle so I hope not- but don’t want to do any damage to the bike either .

THRU axle. No, it's fine to use the same one when riding.

My trainer axle has an extended length and a nut on the right side that requires an 18mm wrench to remove. If I ride on the road, I better remove that nut in case a flat repair is needed. I'm not carrying an 18mm wrench.

it is better than the original, when you crash the trainer axle will protect your frame

Some trainer thru axles are not made to used off the trainer. Saris's for one, are not. Robert Axle Project's are ones that are designed to (robertaxleproject.com) I would check with the axle mfr. and confirm usage.

I had the same question back when I bought my Kickr SNAP - I asked Kickr and Trek and they both said OK to use trainer axle outside. Now a moot point - I just leave my 25 year old Trek 520 on the trainer, use the Domane outside.
