Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ill have to wait til I get a power meter I think. 7 miles uninterrupted would be close to impossible.

And, frankly, until you get a power meter, it doesn't really matter.

edited to add: that's not to say that you need a power meter. You can train without one, but it's just a tool to be a little more effective.

33 km on the 414. It tired me out, gave me an appetite, and restored my humanity.

12 speed is my favorite configuration in road bikes. Six speed freewheels and cassettes are decidedly not easy to find anymore.

So, in genuine curiosity, what makes 12 better than 10 or 14?

One more question. Do I need to be manually flexing that finger now, with all the inflammation, or can I wait til it loosens up some. I don't want to wait too long yet again

Without the benefit of knowing what's really going on, my first piece of advice would be to be gentle and avoid anything that hurts too much. There is some risk that any scar tissue will retract with time and make things tighter, but you really don't want to risk reinjuring the finger. If it's just muscle and healthy connective tissue that should be able to wait.

It just feels right. I really prefer a six speed rear to a seven, for no real reason. And frankly, I don't have much experience with five. I have a five speed corncob here, that I've been awaiting the right application for. Whatever I have back there, I never use them all, unless I'm in the US, where they have actual hills. What makes friction shifting preferable to indexed? Same question/same answer.

Edit: Actually, the six speed rear more easily fits into 126 mm dropout spacing as well.

Are the grooves for the freehub all equal? That's what I'm looking for. Cassette wise. I can buy new six speed cassettes here, but the don't fit my freehubs.
