Austin to Fort Worth

I am a retired teacher planning a bike trip from Austin to Fort Worth in the second week of March. This will be my first riding experience in Texas. I would like to stay on rural roads and take 40-50 mile/day rides. I would appreciate any information about the routes, camping possibilities, interesting sites, etc. Thanks!

Good camping at Inks Lake State Park and Dinosaur Valley in Glen Rose. Book as far in advance as you can.

TCS' route ends in Bastrop, and it's easy to get from Austin to Bastrop. Take MLK, which turns into FM 969; it terminates at SH 71. There's a little bit of "can't get there from here" but you can cut east on Blakey Ln to bypass some of SH 71, and then ride on the grass for about a quarter mile to get to Old Austin Hwy to pick up that route. The alternative is to ride east on the SH 71 feeder, which winds up being longer and is not pleasant.

To pick up that route in Elgin, you can ride FM 973 to Manor, then Old Highway 20/Littig Rd will take you into the middle of Elgin with a slight jog right before you get there. You can also ride the Walnut Creek Trail to get to Manor (or very near).

Good idea, the south winds will push you the whole way. A quick glance at the map and you will see county roads between 281 and 35 that will go north and the route is hard to miss. You will need to be on 281 a couple miles south of Marble falls, but other than that nice quiet roads the whole way. I have never done it with GPS so cant tell you names of the roads, but I can find my way there without a map every few years.

There's no such place as Grandbury TX, by the way. It's Granbury, named after Brigadier General Hiram B. Granbury, Commander of the 7th Texas Infantry and Granbury's Brigade.

Wow. I offered a detailed back roads route with GPX, camping options and points of interest and my thanks is snark about a spelling mistake.

tcs did you remove the post you're referring to? I'd like to take a peek if its still up somewhere. Speeling mistakes welcomed and encouraged.
