Water bottle size

I just figured out why the classic (plastic) water bottle is the size that it is.

I was using an extended water bottle on my 1978 Somec the other day. I was just minding my own business, reached down to grab the bottle and my chain skipped into a higher gear when I pulled it from the cage.. Hmmmm, that's odd! Maybe my freewheel needs a look see when I get back home. Later in the ride, I grabbed the bottle again, and "Clunk!" there goes the rear into another ghost shift.

Then it dawned on me, the extended bottle was hitting the shifter when I pulled it from the cage. I breathed a sigh of relief, and adjusted my extraction technique.

Simple, whenever you need to shift, take a drink!

time to switch to a handlebar mounted bottle cage??

Improved technique is the more obvious solution, but it's good to know what all of the options are.

Bar ends on porter bars! Plus being slow I don't shift often.

You might be on to something here. Did "oversized" bottles evolve after DT shifters became passe?

I'm not sure when big bottles became available... the 90's, maybe?

I do know that around 1980, I was mounting my bottle cage surprisingly high on the downtube. Here we see it posed in my fancy Marine Corps barracks.....

Not much later, my 1982-ish Raleigh Team has bottle mounts located low enough to provide plenty of clearance for a modern big Camelback bottle.

No idea why mounting the cage that low was preferred at that time. Maybe I should check my old catalogs to see what bottle sizes they were selling

edit: my 1980 Bike Warehouse catalog doesn't show any large bottles; just the standard 16 oz bottle.
edit of the edit: put the wrong page in here. here's the correct one...

It sure determined where the frame builders put the bosses! Just sayin'.

It definitely wasn't a consideration for many frames after DT shifting went away, that's for sure. Especially the smaller sizes for instance.
