light weight set up
first time using smaller "bike packing" bags because I could fairly easily find stores and even a hotel if something failed from DC to Pittsburgh via the C&O and GAP trails... ended up working even better than expected with the unplanned PawPaw tunnel detour, I was able to ride up a fair amount of it and all the way down.
Did not have as much time as I would have liked and managed to do it in three and a half days so I had plenty of time to cruise around my old hometown of PGH

48/28 x 11-32 11-speed drivetrain. Works pretty well with the 11-speed Dura-Ace front derailleur to be honest. But it helps to use a chaincatcher. It's a big drop with a 20T difference. I think for the next iteration I might go for a 44/26T x 11-36T setup.
The lever on the seattube was for a bottom bracket dynamo. It would enable you to enable a special type of dynamo to roll against the rear tyre. Apparently it worked pretty well but fell out of favor when dynamo hubs became available.

This is just ignorance with simple physics. The lower your center of gravity, the stabler is your ride. Not only does a heavy bag on the handlebar raises the center of gravity of the rig, the bag catches more wind and impacts the steering. This can be a serious problem with strong cross winds.
You can have a bulky bag on top with lighter stuff - like clothes, sleeping bag. If your weight is concentrated low this will still ride OK. Yea, the heavier your stuff "up top" gets the worse the handling is.

Obligatory campsite photo during an overnighter this week in Ohio. Apologies to the purists for being non-drive side. Briefcase panniers are a bit unorthodox, but I had one that I use for commuting and picked up a second cheap from a BF member, so I've never invested in regular touring bags. Helps to have extra capacity since my 25 year old sleeping bag and 2+ person tent aren't exactly compact. Bike is a late 90's Bianchi Boardwalk hybrid frame that I built up as a drop bar bike mostly with parts I could find at the co-op. Wheels are mismatched because the front has a dynamo hub and I got it used already laced to the rim, but with no matching rear.
Other details for anyone interested - drive train is 3x8 Sora with chainrings reduced to 26-39-50 (from original 30-42-52) and 12-34 rear cluster. Brakes are Tektro CR720s that stick out far enough that they're basically resting on the top of the front bags. Racks are Jandd Expedition racks from a BF member. Tires are 700x32 Panaracer Tourguard, which I've actually found to be disappointingly flat prone despite the name. Maybe just getting old. Pedals for this trip were some MTB platforms from Origin8, but I go back and forth between SPD and platform depending on my mood.

You're packing a tent plus sleeping gear in that rando bag, str ? Fairly spartan set-up for 10 days.
Handle bar bag: 250ml propane gas, a cup for tea, tea bags, cooker, off the bike clothing, underwear, rain jacket, down jacket, bag with chargers, cables, battery pack, 2 spare inner tubes,
head lamp, sleep mattress, second cycling jersey, second cycling underwear, knee warmers, arm warmers, 2 pairs of socks for off the bike, 2 Pais of socks for on the bike.
maybe I forgot something would not bring much more if touring 4 weeks.
