Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I rolled out on the Canyon for my New Years Day ride at about 11:30, after sleeping in and enjoying a leisurely morning. 3 miles in, the rear of the bike starts to feel distinctly spongy, so I look down and sure enough, the tire was going flat. There was a 3x3mm piece of glass stuck through the tread. So, I changed the tube, and pumped it up pretty much all the way, which is not bad for an old guy with a minipump and a 28mm tire. Then, as I unscrewed the hose from the valve, it turned out I had also unscrewed the valve core - FFFffffffffff.......

SON OF A B****!!!!!!

I screwed it back together, pumped it up AGAIN, and rode home. On the way, I considered whether to pump up the previously-flatted tire, give the cut a quick feel to see if it was bulgy at all, toss a new tube in the saddle bag and hit the road again, OR to swap all the stuff over to the Bianchi and hit the road on it, OR to just put the bike back on the trainer and go for a virtual ride. The middle alternative won out. It's just too gorgeous out to be stuck in a windowless garage, watching a virtual landscape go by in low res.

So I ended up doing TWO rides on the first day of 2022. 6 and 31 miles.

Approaching a steep hill, I shifted both derailleurs simultaneously. I think the FD shift was incomplete when I tried to shift the rear. Lots of chain slack caused the jam.

The chain didn't get twisted and the RD seems OK.

Didn't get any grease on the white jersey I was wearing, which is the real win I think.

I have leftover beef goulash in the fridge, but no kraut. There is half a head of cabbage in the fridge though

Not a simple tightening of the cones? You don't even have to take it off. Just loosen the qr.

Is that for your cabbage requirement?

We had Chinese at a local family owned place that we frequent. The type where virtually no one speaks Engrish.

The temp has now dropped over 40 degrees in 4 hours. Cursing the north.

I hope that cold front makes it down here. The forecast is for a cold front, but that's the forecast for the whole country. -10C and snow up north, and we go down to 85A
