Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I should have picked up a head of cabbage at the store the other day when I picked up bacon and noodles. Could have made Halushki and met the cabbage and pork requirement in something that the family will wolf down.

I don’t care for sauerkraut, but years ago my wife explained that you eat black eyed peas for luck and cabbage for money on New Years day. Therefore, we have the peas and egg rolls every year. Ever since, we have had good and great financial years, and very fortunate lives otherwise. I’m afraid to let go of the superstitions. At worst, they can’t hurt.

Correction: those seven fatalities in 2002 weren't in Knox County, so it's maybe two or three.

rinse the kraut a bit in a colander, that might adjust the pungent sourness to your liking.

Mind you, I can stand kraut in a good reuben, but I mean a GOOD reuben.

Mrs. GeneJockey - who loves all kinds of beans - also doesn't like black eyed peas. So, no Hoppin' John in the GeneJockey household, either. And I LOVE Hoppin' John.

I don’t like black eyed peas either, but my wife does. I swallow two like pills using a drink to wash them down. Anything to keep the myth going. We go to Black Eyed Pea for lunch.

I love a good Reuben. Also, knockwurst and kraut on rye with spicy mustard and dill pickle. Also, about any cabbage dish including cole slaw.

It’s another wet day, but well above freezing so our scrappy Sunday “Reservoir Dogs” cafe ride is on.
