Down here in Tasmania ...

It is winter. Well, OK, it's autumn, but it is a cold, wet and miserable autumn day. It is supposed to clear off a bit later so hopefully we'll get out for a ride.

Saturday -- we got out for a 28.34 km ride. Better than nothing! But it did seem to be a slog. We don't know whether it was just because we're tired or because of the wind and cold.


Just before we got cycling we did an experiment filming and taking a collection of still shots to show how to start a bicycle ... these are one each of those shots ...

Sunday -- Today we decided to do a slightly longer ride because the weather was marginally better. So we covered 41.47 km in a nearby beach area.

The route was mostly flat but did have a few hills and some wind.

In yesterday's race, I managed to stay out of a big crash in our field, so that was good. But I also managed to stay out of contention, so that was kind of depressing.

Today it was supposed to snow, so the usual mega group ride was cancelled. However, half a dozen of us met up at the usual time and place and made a 40 mile trip up for some pie (and ice cream, too, for me!). It was not much above freezing, if at all at some points, and we even got a tiny bit of sleet. There was a slight headwind for a while, but nothing too bad. I lead the way for a good bit on the way up, including the point at which we needed to decide which climb we were going to take. So we went up my fave: Clausland Mountain Road. After pie, we made quick work of the ride home.

All in all, a pretty good weekend, especially considering how bad the weather was predicted to be. Although the races Saturday were full (waiting lists, even!), today there were only a fraction of the riders one normally sees this time of year.

Sun: 43mi group ride. our club's "spring" opener ride... it was around 30 at start time haha luckily the sun came out a bit and moving at a good clip got the blood moving. got dropped off the front group a few miles in but teamed up with a few guys for the rest of the ride and shared the work nicely.

38 miles of hills and 15 mph winds in N. Texas. My longest ride yet, and I'm still recovering.

Went for 6 days out of 6 to (between rain) to try and hit 150+ miles, finished it today with 210 miles total Tuesday-Sunday ( 40,21,63,33,21,32 miles One of them was an attempt at 100k .

I've been working on cadence, last few rides got my average to 85, with highs of 110.

Saturday 95 miles. Starting at about 40 F ending at 24 F. The road and riding was nice. Now a big snowstorm is predicted. Time to put the road bike back and get out the studded tire bike again.

Saturday - Legs were flat so I only went 30 miles. Took out the new (old) Greg LeMond Ventoux to test it out but the legs and the wind didn't cooperate. Squeezed some 700 x 28 GP 4000s II tires on this for a plush ride too!



Sunday - Finally, good temps and not much wind. So I took out the Giordana Superleggero to finally see what the bike could do. What a blast this ol' beast is. Held about a 20 mph average pace for the whole ride except when climbing. Raced through the turns and pushed faster and faster to try and find a limit to the grip. Loving it!

Our group ride was rained out last weekend, so we did an indoor group ride instead, but only for and hour and a half. I guess we're getting soft in our old age! This Sunday, we managed to squeeze in a 37 mile hilly ride before it started to rain. I've been downhill skiing one day a week, and skiing pretty hard, to the tune of 20,000' or so in 4 hours. I guess that's been paying off because today we went like stink on the tandem with good power on the short rollers. We had a racer girl drafting us and we gave her a good workout, setting a few Strava PRs here and there. So I guess we did OK, except that I broke the stoker again. Bad captain! She had a great time anyway.

Thursday, typical Davis Is. evening ride for 33 miles. Saturday was a little odd. Legs and left knee were hurting. Downtown was partially blocked with the Criterium. There was also tons of traffic in front of the airbase for an airshow and I got caught up in the traffic. Short story of it all I had to reroute myself and shorten the ride to about 31 miles. This worked out well since it started raining shortly after I got home. Sunday the streets were soggy, but got in a nice 40 mile ride to Upper Tampa Bay trail and back.

Lots of gravel this weekend.

Saturday: 24 miles on gravel trails on the fatbike. ~13mph, which is fast on a fatbike. Cold morning but a nice ride. The fatbike is fun as hell.

Sunday: Organized metric century on gravel. ~250 people. I did it on a drop bar single speed with fenders. Avg 17 mph. Sketchy farming roads with big loose gravel and lots of washouts, you really had to pay attention. Upper thirties temps and a 25mph+ cross wind out in the corn fields made for an exhausting ride for late March... My wrists are sore.

Great day in North Florida yesterday. Mid 70's Sunny, and moderate wind. Rode along the coast to Amelia Island.

Its a lovely ride, all bike lane, ocean, marsh and forest views, through 2 state parks.



Caught part of the Amelia Island Vintage Gran Prix races, featuring vintage sports cars from pre WW2 up to recent GT cars. Riding up was a great way to see the Race. No parking hassles, and easier to get around than the long walks from the parking area to the paddock and spectating areas.

Unfortunately only had a cell phone camera so the pics are limited quality.

45 miles on a new (to me) 2001 Specialized S-Works CX bike with 35mm semi-slicks on it. Took my usual route up to Beals Point and back. Yes I am going to re-use this picture in the bikes by water thread too.

Nice pics. Reminds me of my petrolhead days when I was full-time media manager for Targa Tasmania back in the early-1990s. Pre-cycling, of course.
