I am looking at a 2009 Surly LHT tonight after work and the owner is asking $800 for the bike. The original bike cost $1150.

Stock components with 1500 miles on it. Has always been stored inside.

What would you be willing to pay assuming the bike in in very good condition.

2009 is only a couple years old. I don't think they've made many changes to either the LHT or the components since then. But I'd check.

If it was the bike I was looking for, I wouldn't have a big problem paying $800 for it.

You don't want to spend $800 on the bike, then have to strip a bunch of stuff off and replace it with what you really want. That way can quickly raise the price to levels higher than if you'd bought the components and frame and built it up from scratch.

I paid $850 for mine - and it was new. It was ordered for a customer who changed his mind. Luckily it fit me.

If it had racks/fenders/other accessories added, then $800 would be a good price. Completely stock? Not a great price, but if it fits, and you like it.... why not.

I don't think $800 is a bad price if everything is in good shape. With 1500 miles, it's probably in good condition, but it's also enought miles that it could be a bit beat up, and it could have lots of paint chips, worn chain and cassette, rust starting from winter riding on salted roads. Just look it over carefully. Stay away if there are any dents or dings in the tubing, some paint chips would be OK, but make sure there's no rust starting in them. A little rust on the chain or on stem bolts is fine.

Also, Surly changes their colors a lot and I personally think it's worth it to have a bike you like to look at (I think some of their colors are horrible). If you like the color (and if you dislike the current production colors), $800 isn't a bad price.

I think it's a little high unless it's exactly what you want (you never pay too much for exactly what you want!). $650 would be a good deal. $700 is fair.

I've looked at that one, it's been up on craigslist for a while so he may be willing to bargain on the price. Keeps coming up while I'm looking for a 1x1 frame.

My girlfriend bought a Cross Check for $700 on Craigslist, with a laundry list of upgrades ( stem, bars, brake levers, SPD pedals with platform adapters, saddle, and other stuff I can't remember ), and about 100 miles on it.

The one you're looking at might have its original chain, soon to need a replacement, and depending how it's been ridden ( Surleys like it rough ) could possibly have a bit of wear in the wheels.

My LBS had LHT's for $1049, so I'd say that $800 is a little much for a bike with 1,500 miles on it. If the bike is still in really good shape, $700 seems fair. If you need to invest in a new chain, tires, bar tape, etc. deduct accordingly.

$800 is too much. There was one on Chicago Craigslist for $650 recently, and it lasted several days. I'd say $600-700 is the right range, especially with that many miles.

Thanks for all the feedback. I went and checked out the bike last night.

It was in beautiful shape and based on the tire wear (still had original tires), I think the bike had far less than 1500 miles on it. It was a joy to ride, way smoother than by 7100, but the fit just wasn't right so I decided to pass. I felt somewhat cramped and think I need either the 60cm or a 58cm with a different stem/headset and some wider drop bars. The bike I rode was a 58cm, but the current owner is a woman who is three inches shorter than me with longer legs and shorter arms.

I will soon be making a trip to my LBS to order a new LHT. The big decision now is whether to order the complete bike and "tweak" a couple of components or do a true custom build.

Additional advice gladly accepted.

Do a true custom build and skip the bar end shifters. Well, that will cost more, but if you have the bike for several years, it's probably worth it.

Found a crosscheck with better components via CL for 650.00.. I would offer 600 - 700.00 and see if he bites.

It really depends on what you are willing to spend. In smaller markets that might be a good price, but in larger markets not so much. Make sure the bike fits first and then check over the components. Surlys run a bit large.

How tall are you? I ride a 60cm LHT. I am 6'2" with a relatively short (about 33") inseam. I don't have much top tube clearence, but enough to get by. The stock bars on my model (2011) and pretty darn wide. Good for my broad shoulders. Maybe she had hers replaced. Surly's web site lists the stock bar widths for the different sizes. 58cm comes with 440 mm bars. 60cm comes with 460 mm bars.

I am 6' 1" with a 32" inseam. I have very little top tube clearance on the 58cm but it is enough. I did a sizing at my LBS last night for the LHT and I am pretty sure the 58cm is the right size. They don't stock the LHT, so they put me on an Specialized Allez, which has the same stand over height and top tube length. It has a much different stem length and stem angle, but I am confident that I can get the fit dialed in on a 58cm. Right now I am just checking around the other LBS' to see if I can find a better price. They quoted me $1275 and that is the answer from two other local stores. I am still waiting for one more call.

I found the exact bike online for about $100 less, but then I would have to pay for a fitting and for a couple of other changes I want to make. I just bought a brand new hand built rear wheel (40 hole White Industries MI5 hub, Mavic A719 rim, 14g spokes) for my hybrid and I need to swap cassettes and put the new wheel on the LHT. So, if all goes well I will be placing my order in the next day or so.
