Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looks like I am taking a three-day trip to Jersey this weekend. 60 miles on Friday. whatever I decide to do for a loop ride from camp Saturday and then about 35 miles from camp to the shore and up to Atlantic City for the train home. Supposed o be a great weekend weather-wise, with a high down that way on Saturday of upper 70s. I haven't seen the ocean in over a year.

Criminy. They need a tractor trailer just for the kits.

My 5 siblings and I are getting together at The Ancestral Home in Pennsylvania next weekend, which is now owned by one of my sisters. This will be the first time we've gotten together since Dad's memorial in 2019. We've been chatting online about it, and it seems like we're gonna eat and drink a lot. I wish I could take a bike! I guess it will be a 'rest week'. I tried looking into bike rentals near Gettysburg, but I didn't find anything. I suppose there's always Shanks' Mare. Maybe a battlefield walk.

Oh, yeah. I suppose it's not really accurate to say I found nothing when looking for bike rentals near Gettysburg. I DID find a bike store in G-burg whose website said, "We will not be renting bikes in 2021 because of the virus".

I will be jonesing severely by the time I get back.

Did you bring a carpet sample to match the furniture?

If you have a pool, no tub time needed all summer.

Shame. I rode around the Gettysburg site maybe 15 years ago during a fall Friday afternoon. It was quite nice. Hardly any traffic.

Good ride, but we lost one rider. I am the ride leader so I felt responsible. At the rest stop she was not there and some of the other riders assumed she kept on riding. We did not see her for a few miles after that, so I had a friend pull her phone number and I called her. She had just arrived at the rest stop, having missed a turn a few miles earlier. She got back ok so no harm done.

I'm actually looking for exercise, not the tourist experience. If I had a bike, there are miles and miles of backroads I would ride on, rather than the battlefield roads which are full of bulletdiggers.

Not what you are used to, but this place may have something to let you scratch the itch: Bicycle Rentals – Gettysbike Tours

Hmmmm......

Years ago, we were going to be Back East for 2 weeks, visiting first my family in South Central PA, then Mrs. GJ's family in the Upper Lefthand Corner of PA, then back to South Central. So I shipped a bike to Mom and Dad's place. Of course, it didn't arrive until AFTER we'd left for the Upper Lefthand Corner. So I ended up getting in maybe 2 rides. I remember 2 things above all else: humidity and gradient. The air felt thick, and it really felt like a lot more effort to move through it. And of course, sweat wasn't evaporating so I just got hot and sodden. And the gradients - out here, the actual hills are so steep you can't just run the road up them, you need switchbacks, so the climbs aren't all that steep - 7-9% averages. Back there, they just run the roads over the hilll with no switchbacks. The climbs are shorter, but steeper.

Nope.

Not sure if you're serious about meeting there.

My sources indicate that you will not have a bicycle to do the Tour de Brown Squirrel.

You are crunched for time so I thought a brief "hey how do ya do" would work. I didn't want to spend time seeing what was at each exit. Open for suggestions don't care where.
