Cup and cone BB o-rings

O-rings are toast. Where can I find replacements or are they unnecessary? Shimano cup and cone.

Your 'local' bearing stockists? Measure them up and order.

I assume that they have just worn with age?

I've not seen that Shimano ever offered these separately as replacement parts. It's possible that a bearing supply house might have suitable replacements. Failing that, the old-school sealing was done by wrapping a piece of pipe cleaner around the bb axle adjacent to the cup.

Do you clean and adjust them often as routine maintenance? Probably not really needed in that case.

Cartridge BB's are cheap once you know which works with your bike. Last a long time and when they do go bad, 18 bucks and you have a new one.

The bike was a garage sale rescue and needed a full strip down. I ended up buying a used bottomed bracket at the bike coop and using the o-rings from that set. There is someone selling new sets on eBay for $16. I only paid $30 for the bike, so there was no way I was going to spend 50% of the bike on two pieces of rubber.

Well, it is good that you found a solution.

It is always worth remembering that just because two pieces of rubber are 50% of the bike's purchase price should not be an automatic brake on purchasing, as it is the selling price of the bike minus the total investment price that is of interest - $16 + p&p to your door minus gas and time to drive to the LBS...
