I'm pretty heavy too, no issues, but after coming from Omniums I feel like the stiffness is noticeable. also when I was off the saddle going up a hill I felt flex in a way that didn't make me all that comfortable. They're more than sufficient for anyone <180 I'm sure though and

How heavy is heavy for you guys? I'm guessing I'm one of the bigger riders here at 265. I've got legs the size of tree stumps and can mash pretty darn hard. Suggestions?

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mash
Every time I see someone say that they are heavy and that they can therefore "mash pretty hard" I assume that they don't know what the word means. The word does not refer to downward pressure on bicycle pedals. If you are using mashing to refer to downward pressure this should refer to potatoes, not bikes.

Word meanings are based on their usage in a speech community. If I'm in the minority of a BFSSFG members who think that mash shouldn't be used to refer to fat guys pushing really hard on pedals, then I stand corrected. Dictionary definitions don't have anything to do with it, except in so far as they serve a normative function. I'd guess that urban dictionary is more normative here than Webster's.

Only thing I noticed is how smooth they are

That urban dictionary definition is pretty ridiculous. Mashing = pushing big gears is generally accepted in the roadie world too.

"ride a bicycle furiously" hahahaa!!!! Normative only for some goof from UCSD that shreds the boardwalks.

Here's a corny online encyclopedia usage, cuz I know you love those.

Just wondering, why the shot at "fat guys"? I can't push a larger gear because I'm not overweight? Smoke a bowl man, you're thinking too hard about this.

Haven't weighed myself in a while, but I'm likely around 240 with pretty large legs as well. This is the nicest crankset I've had though, so I suppose I couldn't tell you if a stiffer one felt better.

Well done, sir. *applause*

I hang out in the road forums and that is the most accepted definition. I believe the term "mashing" is sometimes associated with out-of-the-saddle climbing as well (e.g. this: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...-mash-up-hills) but that could be due to the fact that most people can push a bigger gear when out of their saddle.

Maybe it's all the fixed gear riding I've been doing almost exclusively as of late, but I say spinning is more impressive than mashing.

Yeah. I've been riding my SS pretty much exclusively and obviously your cadence is what it is for whatever speed you want to be traveling, so I tend to spin a bit faster than I would with my geared bikes. I think it feels good.

Of course, there comes a point when you look slightly silly when you're going all "road runner" on your bike so you have to watch out for that.

I like to spin furiously and show those fools on beach cruisers how to really ride a bike.

This was to some extent my point. Why do 300 lb guys think that they "can really mash"? Carleton and TT tell us over and over that body size has almost nothing to do with competitiveness on the track. The shot at fat guys was the delusion that because they might be able to press down hard on the scale that this would convert to some special torsional strength on a bike.

same here, the great thing w/ ss is developing your spin. with one gear, you eventually grind up hills anyway.

if you're smooth, you don't look silly

I was just being a jerk. I don't think there is any reason why you should worry about the amount of flex you can get in the s300's unless you are doing standing starts at a track where power really is an issue. In the case of going up hills flex in the crankarms shouldn't matter at all. The only think to worry about is metal fatigue which really shouldn't happen with the s300's, though someone just had a picture of broken andels. The more pressing concern is tacoing the chainring, which has more to do with making sure the bolts are tight enough than anything else.
