My childhood friend is riding his bicycle from Jacksonville, Florida to Alaska

He left with no income and no savings. He's using a $90 bicycle and is currently in northern California.

Once I have 10 posts I'll link his youtube page.

You can find him by searching WizardWes.

He's gotta eat at some point. Is he doing odd jobs or something?

Hope your friend makes it. I’ve heard the road to Alaska is tough on equipment. Also, not much in the way of services.

Mainly faith with the occasional donation.

He doesn't exactly count on anything. Nothing is promised.

How about--> he counts on the universe watching after him

Anyhow, I hope he makes it too.

Personal Experience: I've ridden from Seattle to the top of Alaska (Arctic Ocean) and wild-camped most nights. Periodically I'd use a pay campsite mostly for a shower. I spent about $25/day average. I cooked most of my meals. Canada and remote areas can cost more for food. You need a lot of calories. On a separate trip I rode from Florida to the west coast and spent about $17/day.

So he's a homeless guy with a bike, going on vacation. He's counting on others, even if he's aware it's not a reliable source.

Nothing necessarily wrong with that, I suppose. Hopefully he doesn't wind up like Christopher McCandless, who died soon after the handouts stopped coming.

True from my experience. I did have to make repair-purchases on several occasions. You want to be especially prepared for remote areas.

Interesting attitudes and approaches. The potential of faith often goes largely unexplored. People tend not to have faith in it, and don't take it very far.

What time of year did you leave Seattle to avoid cold weather up there?

Left Seattle --> May 11, 2011
Arrived Deadhorse AK -->July 12, 2011

Any night could have been below freezing, but most were not.

Long days of light as I progressed. 24hrs once above the Arctic circle!

By way of additional insight to how he does it financially:

I watched (skimmed through ) some of his videos He DOES have a list of patrons that provide support. They
may not be guaranteed but they exist. It seems that he can even afford a motel on occasion!

Here's the link to his YouTubes

He didn't die because he tried, but was unable to, obtain handouts. In fact, he lived for more than 100 days in a remote area of Alaska, including three months in the bus where he was found dead.

Maybe the guy will become the next Iohan Gueorguiev.

Bike Wanderer

He started in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and 4.5 years later has made it to Argentina.

His video's are worth watching.

McCandless died because he starved trying to live off the land without really knowing how to do it properly (he didn't have the right knowledge), and because he was stubborn and made some bad decisions.

The story captured the imaginations of a writer and then a director, and then many other people.

This story has some similarities.

What are these attractions about? Attractions to what, exactly?

Both for the person and for those watching?

Hes counting on registering on forums such as this, tugging at heart strings and getting donations. Its the new digital panhandling. I mean seriously, the op registered here just to post this. Don’t be a sucker.

I don't want to judge anyone for begging or living off handouts. However, I would like to see someone do the same sort of trip without accepting any handouts from anyone, and finding ways to earn money while on the road. In fact, I'd like to see multiple people try that, and see the different approaches they came up with.

Also bingo. And for all we know, OP is this guy.

I would like to see someone do the same sort of trip without accepting any handouts from anyone, and finding ways to earn money while on the road.
It's been done.

This doesn’t bother me in the least. He’s not pretending to be raising money for charity. He is the charity. If you support the guy, that’s great. I hope he makes to wherever he’s going. However, I’ll be funding my own charity...myself.

Cogent observation.

I will add that the OP started the exact same thread in General. It has since been locked as cross posting is not permitted under forum rules.

I want to state that I feel the same way. At least he's being honest and actually doing something, unlike a certain scammer (who I will not name) who received national attention several years ago for accomplishing virtually nothing while raising tens of thousands of dollars to fund his gluttony and other things.

Must watch the videos.

I recommend starting with number 13: The Wild and Beauty of the North (The Canol Heritage Trail)
