Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

humbled

I was on a video meeting with a coworker in another state and we were waiting for more to join so we talked a bit and bikes came up. He said I am not talking his language so we geeked out on bikes we own and whatnot. I mentioned I ride gravel and road mostly, he said he does ironman triathlons and is training for one coming up next year, and when I mentioned Zwift he said Im really talking his language now.

So I look him up on Strava and have to mute the conversation because I start laughing so hard. In the comparison chart Strava shows, my 2,700mi year to date was sitting next to his 13,140mi. Haha, I cant even imagine that distance in 10 months time!

Holy Shnikies !! I wish I did 2700 miles. I did set a personal mileage best for the last few years tho so I am getting better. A girl I work with does Ironman's Her resting HR is about 35 and I bet she weighs about 90 pounds. She slays the big guys on the ride and the run. Her and her bike probably only go about 110 pounds if that.

People that do IronMan Triathalons are a different breed.

Wow, that's big mileage. I think my biggest year ever is about 8500. 13K in 10 months is insane!

13k in 10 months is. a lot. Even accounting for the fact that Zwift miles are inflated.

And if he's a triathelete, that isn't counting his distances/time running and swimming.

I just tell myself that I don't live in a climate conducive to that kind of mileage.

Over the last couple of years, I've had a few months on that kind of pace (1000+ miles/month). It's a lot of time - you've either gotta be really committed to riding as a lifestyle or you need to be using riding to run away from something else going on in your life.

I'm setting high goals for myself next year !! Would love to average 100 miles a week. I lost most of April because the doc hadn't released me to do anything like that yet. Next year .... gonna be bigger , better , faster, angrier ..... Ok Im running away from things in my life

Who, me?

When I'm not limited by injuries, my summer months are 1000+miles/month. It's both. (lifestyle, running from).

Ha. I mean, yeah, I'm the same way, though the over/under is probably 800 or 900 - I wouldn't have said that if I didn't have personal experience to know there's truth in it. It's funny - when I'm having a particularly bad day (or a series of meh days), my wife will approach me the evening before a day off and ask, "you're going to be gone all day tomorrow, right?" Yes, ma'am!

Oh, and 1402 miles run this year per Strava.

Zwift miles are inflated? An hour on Zwift = way more effort than an hour on the road for me. Lack of coasting, I assume. It also feels like more effort because a fan doesnt replicate actual wind.

I just think that those are just his cycling miles. You also need to factor in his runs. That's a lot of time.

Most triathletes do flat miles, which does not interest me. I will always make fun of their aerobars and call them flatlanders. Currently average 108 feet per mile of climbing this year, and if I did just flats, I'm guessing I could double my mileage count. Probably not 13K, but perhaps 10K. I also run, but only about 200 miles a year.

Average speeds on Zwift are not realistic. Faster speed means more miles/time.

Flat miles are harder for me. Not that they're more work, they just feel like it somehow.

Somewhat for me! I do not have the mental fortitude for flat miles. I can always pedal less, nothing is forcing me to go faster. I will try to go fast for a bit, but then I forget I want to go fast. With climbs, if you stop pedaling, you go backwards. You feel the push, the gain.

Yeah, a bit. My average speed's always higher on Zwift than IRL.

EDIT: You're right about the effort, though. I probably put out at least as much effort in an hour on Zwift as I do in an hour and half on the road.

Cranking a Zwift? Not really road cycling, is it? Maybe better to move it to Tri sub-forum.

Yeah, my avg on zwift is faster than on the road, but I always just chalked that up to a mix no slowing down due to turns/lights/signs, as well as putting out more w/kg on zwift from basically never coasting and treating it as straight exercise vs outdoor riding which is an exercise/enjoyment ratio

Why would this need to move? Zwift was discussed, but that doesn't mean it needs to move to the indoor forum. Triathlons we're discussed, but that doesnt mean it needs to move to the tri forum. Older bikes were discussed, but that doesnt mean it needs to move to the c&v forum.
The thread is right where I intended to post it- in the road forum as I ride paved and gravel roads and compared Strava profiles.

I think it's because they're not as fun, as interesting. Although this year for the first time I have been doing some flat rides on a bike path. Must be the old age.

For me, an hour on Zwift is about the same effort, less output, but more mileage. Yeah, it's all messed up.

I think that, for me, going arrow straight is no fun, and that's more common with, but not limited to, billiard table flat landscapes. Some curves and a little undulation is enough for a good time (twhs?). Long climbs, not that there's any of those in my region, get monotonous to me, too, though.

I live in a climate that allows that kind of mileage, but it's really hard to stay motivated enough to do much more than 1k miles a month. July and August are so hot that you either ride pre-dawn, or do shorter rides.
