That crank has the only bash-guard I've ever seen that actually looks good! The Gran Sport is one of my favorite Raleighs.

Jamesj: It looks great. Definitely leave paint "as-is". You might somehow be able to get some new downtube decals, even if you have to sand a bit and lay them on top.

Daka, That bike is gorgeous. Thanks for the specs on the geometry, Good call on the Huret derailleurs. I can see why you moved the bash-guard off. Makes sense. Not sure which year yours is, but in '76, Raleigh was definitely calling it the Gran Sport.

While I had a separate topic on mine a couple of months back, here's mine. Just got back from an enjoyable ride even if only 15 miles. I need to take a new photo as two days ago I installed a longer-reach stem.

I've wanted to find a Raleigh Gran Sport for a while. I finally found one in my size that I plan on building up as a kind of gravel grinder as it has space for large volume tires (700 x 35c tires). It has Zeus competition drop outs and I suspect it is an early 70s model. The rear triangle had been spread to 126 OLD and the hanger unfortunately was drewed. The first two show how the bike came to me in the wild. The last three are after I started working on it. The bike came with Mafac racer brakes that I'll swap out for Weinmann centerpulls. There's nothing wrong with the derailleurs that came on the bike so I'll stick with those. The wheels that came on the bike don't match but I have a decent set of wheels with Mavic MA 40 rims that I'll use. The rest of the bike is still in the planning stages.

I just finished the build on my Raleigh Gran Sport and did a 25 mile ride. I love the way the bike rides. It is a responsive machine that handles rough stuff well. This is a Frankenbike build with most of the parts coming from my parts bin. The bar and stem are new. The saddle and derailleurs came on the bike when I bought it. I built this with generous gearing (a 50/34 crank and a 13-30 6 speed freewheel) and decent volume 700 x 35c tires as I plan on riding the bike on gravel.

If you have some of these Simplex downtube shifters in your stash, then these cable adjusters will fit.
I think they are the same ones that fit the Raleigh International brake bridge.
If you don't have the Simplex shifters handy, PM me, I have one I can mail you taken from those down tube shifters.
The other one resides on my International.

I found a Grand Sports on the curb last month and finished rebuilding it yesterday!
I replaced everything but the stem, seatpost, and headset; due to the condition of the frame I wanted to put as little money into it as possible. I'm out around $25 for one tube, rear rim tape, and the chain. It's set up with a coaster brake but I kept the front cable hanger in case it ever becomes a candidate for restoration. Wish I could have put wider tires on it but I've had this pair of 700x28 Tourguards kicking around the garage for years.
The wheels came off another trash find, I had to relace the front with a new hub because the old one was rusted out. I've never had a Reynolds 531 beater before, makes me wish the Clunker Challenge was running right now! If I could justify spending $100 on this bike I would buy it some nicer tires.

I've added a dynamo hub, light, and a rack and bag.
Same great bike. Runs 38mm Graveling slicks.
