I was somewhat woefully ignorant as well then Dave came to a small bike shop on a tour here in PDX a few years ago.

Took a hard look at the Merz I rode in on and complimented it but said he wasn't familiar with Jim.

Only a few people showed up but what a great evening, spoke to everything, answered all the questions and was as gracious as you could ever hope for.

Been a huge fan ever since, found the tiny one and bought it anyway as a placeholder and to get my hands on one.

Found the red and yellow one after a couple more years, a bit rough and small so it sat and still does as I later found the two big ones in completely different places on the same day and eventually got them both, the older red and silver one is the prize but the white one is no slouch either.

Dave is impressive in that IMO, none of his many endeavors were a step back per se, trained in England, rocked it at Paris-Sport, Masi, Fuso, John Howard and Recherch'e, usually seeming to improve in some way with each move.

The tiny pink one needs to find a new home, maybe I'll put it in the trade thread again?

I often wondered how many hours are spent designing some of the early head badges. I’ve seen a few that are quite ornate and detailed , while others make a statement by simplicity. I can see why some folks would collect them … but then they wouldn’t be on the bikes anymore. Just collect bikes instead!!

The Araya headbadge on the Road 821. Not all that attractive, and I think it was on all their bikes.

These two bikes had been in storage at my local bike shop for a few years. I inquired but the original owner picked them up and did not want to sell them as they had a family connection. They were a long way from home, here in Norfolk County Ontario Canada.

I saw this at a swap. I like it, but don't recognize it. It's Italian. Anyone know the maker?

Very interesting story about S.C.O.P.D, when, at Manufrance, the workers took over the company and formed a co-operative:

Peugeot absorbed several marques both during the interwar period and in the immediate postwar time.

An interesting headplate theme might be to show some of these, both in their Peugeot and pre-Peugeot versions if there are differences.

Some of these names as recalled include Griffon, Helium & Terrot - there are doubtless others am forgetting...

Our numberous leone rampante experts are sure to know!

Griffon cycle believed to be from first decade of 20th century

Griffon cycle of 1913

Griffon cycle of 1930

Griffon cycle early 1950's (Peugeot time)

as so ofttimes occurs in these matters member non-fixie showseth the way...

https://www.bikeforums.net/18377865-post18.html

https://www.bikeforums.net/18417367-post20.html

[there have also been Griffon marques in California & Britain]
