Hopefully, punching through the mat absorbed a significant portion of the kinetic energy.

Proof that 'water in the southern hemisphere swirls the other way' is a hoax? Or 'proof' that at the equator draining water doesn't swirl'? I think I've seen that before, but what I remember was a woman doing the demonstration, and those hands identify as masculine

Well, I wasn't looking for man hands...

But, you pretty much nailed it. The demonstration was right on the equator, showing that the water does not swirl. Of course, it swirls one way here and the opposite way down in Rand McNally...

I have seen elsewhere a convincing explanation that the effect is real, but it is very small, so you have to take extraordinary care to ensure the water starts still, that adding the indicator particles or removing the plug doesn't create a starter swirl. It showed how some tour guide in Australia or South America was rigging their demonstration with a subtle wrist flick that gave the water a start in the desired rotation.

Hmm...I'd been told (by edumucated types) that the Coriolis Effect only had that influence upon larger bodies of water. Not small ones like sinks and toilets.

Indeed you can do the wrist flick to get the water to swirl in either direction... but it works better in one direction than the other, that is the Coriolis effect.
