How many miles? I have no idea.

Might be a more useful metric for people who go on different types of rides (MTB vs road, for instance) and on varied terrain (flat vs hilly). After all, a 20-mile MTB ride with 3000 feet of climbing will take longer, and be more work, than a 50-mile flat road ride.

Time makes the most sense to me for MTB. MTB rides are really hard to quantify. Mileage and elevation don't capture it all. A super rocky/rooty/technical ride is a lot more work than a smooth ride of equal mileage and elevation.

Mine are mounted to stems, but I get your point. I pretty much only pay attention to the one on my touring bike when I am touring in in/less familiar places so I can have an idea how far the next supply point or my campground is. The one on my road bike would randomly zero out sometimes so it’s kept in sleep mode. Battery in the unit might even be dead by now.

I experience a psychological pain if I'm getting ready to roll out and realize my Garmin battery wasn't charged, and that I now have to record the ride with my Strava phone app, and keep the phone hidden in my jersey back pocket where I can't see my mileage, elevation, and duration tallies, nor my power meter data. Real pain. But if everything is charged properly, it's as easy as pressing the power button, pressing start, and then pressing stop 50 miles later. Done. No spreadsheet, or logging, or calculations. Strava does all the work, and then I get to over-analyze my power data and and segment attempts for the next 30-60 minutes. What's not to like?
According to Strava 32,148.2 mi, and 1283 rides since 2013, and that took me all of 10 seconds to find out.

Clear your handlebars and your mind will follow.
but then I only have hindsight from a single perspective.
