Is this crack terminal ??

Hi, I was rather dismayed today to find this crack on my old Teschner aluminum frame that I am quite attached to .

I have reluctantly concluded this it is probably not safe to ride, but would appreciate an opinion on whether it is
1. repairable
2. worth repairing

Thanks

My guess is sadly not. I don't weld aluminium but generally quality alu frames need heat-treatments. So even if you cut the TT and DT a bit shorter and rewelded the HT on I think the whole thing would need to be stripped of paint and heat-treated in an oven. You could of course just bodge it and it would probably be OK but only worth doing that as an amateur project.

Thanks for the great pics. I would never have that fixed. It has been there so long the copious crack face surface area has been oxidized and fouled with dirt. And due to the number of times the crack has branched, it would be difficult to get it back into shape. This is in addition to the potential problems with heat treating.

I would replace the frame if you can get another Teschner frame or become attached to your next bike. A proper repair would not be economically feasible.

For aluminum that is a frame ender. Especially if it is 6000 series.

Wow... Great thread... I continue to learn allot about bicycles in general. My experience is in Steel bikes. If this were a steel bike I guess you could consider a repair but in that its aluminum, its a gonner. If that's the case it looks like a new frame and transfer of components is in order...

Thanks for the replies, well I guess that's pretty conclusive then

Time to start hunting a new old frame..... again....these components (mainly 105) and wheels originally all came off a bike with a broken frame that I bought for AU$80 and put onto the Teschner frame
