Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Still I can't see myself going full on mtb. But wider tires off road I think I could live with. I mean drivers are no longer prosecuted, let alone questioned anymore. Everybody knows road cyclists have a death wish. Especially the cops.

I get about 20-25 hours per charge of my 530 using an array of sensors including the Varia. I generally charge them both up at the same time.

It doesn't affect the battery life of my Wahoo at all. I think that the problem with Garmin units was linked to the backlight - it would kick the light on when a vehicle was being tracked. Not sure if that's all been addressed via firmware.

As far as 510 vs 515 - I don't think that you can go wrong as long as you get one.

Garmin now has a radar unit without a light - that makes it a little more viable to pair with a light/camera combo unit. Then again, the changing flashing pattern for approaching vehicles is a compelling feature of the Varia, to me.

It's a stupid Google thing. Every so often I'll experience that, though it's been awhile. I go to Firefox, and no sweat, no issue.

One one of the things I like about living here is that we have tons of terrain and hills that get steep, most are over in 4-5 minutes but there are others that take a while. It’s not hard to find a short hill that gets over 10%.
Yeah, I'm about 185. I'm sure that I could manage, I just need the gearing and, maybe the most difficult part, I'd have to get comfortable with going slow.

The bing thing is that it definitely sees cars behind me way before I can hear or see them. The only times I can look back and see them first is on LONG straights, and then still I’d have to turn and look to see them. Usually the Varia beeps at me first. It’s great.

In sailing, whenever there is a significant loss of life or property at sea, there is an expert investigation and a public report. As a result, the root causes of bad events are uncovered and there is continuous appraisal and development of gear and procedures. The information is disseminated by the media and through certification courses required by authorities for things like offshore racing. A lot of doctrine also comes from the maritime industry who pay huge insurance bills and have international conventions on safety.

All that makes gear choices really easy, if expensive, and the use case for each item is established by testing, experience, and real world data. I wish to hell we had something like that for cycling beyond, "wear a helmet."

Have you reached the point where you would buy a new one immediately if it were lost? If so, how many rides did that take? I think that I reached that point within a few rides. Going on a road ride without it now gives me a minor case of the heebie jeebies.

I can see a runway 30 miles out, see planes easily when we’re passing in the sky, it’s just letters.
Go to a store or pharmacy where they have those racks of cheap reading glasses and try some different ones. I started with 1.25 and eventually went up to 1.75 just to have around before I got my first prescription glasses.
I can use the 1.75s on the bike now even though they aren't strong enough for reading and my eyes are slightly different from each other. I use 'script glasses for driving and they work great for distance but not so great on the bike when I need to see the ground in front of me.

Ill do this when I order new tape. Bummed that I ruined the tape so early in its life. I don’t think I can buy the same replacement cervelo tape. Somebody else asked me where I got it.

I started the reading glasses in my 40s, I didn't use them on the bike until 65. (partly because of being stupid and stubborn)

I feel that way about my helmet mirror. If I got a radar I'd probably feel the same way.

And then I would embrace the my inner fred and ride with both the radar and a mirror. It's so convenient to not have to turn my head to look back!

I like expander plugs, cuz they stay in better. Ye olde rubber Cateyes are my favorite, but hard to find these days. The Velox rubbers don't look as good, but work well. And nowadays you can get fancy alumnium ones from various makers in all colours of the rainbow.

Here's the chrome Cateyes.

How do the expander plugs work with stuffing bar tape in the ends like if you're wrapping cloth tape top to bottom? I've got an ancient set of rubber Velox ones from my SLT that I have to hammer in when I tuck the ends of the cotton tape in. It's always discouraged me from picking some aluminum ones up, even though they look so good.
