Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Boardman Air 9.4 vs 9.8

Struggling to get info on the new Boardman Air Elite Series bikes, in US.

1. Given identical frame weights (1150g), cannot isolate the 14 ounce (397g) difference b/w the two bikes, even after comparing the specs. Basically, the 9.4 has Dura Ace over Sram Red, Boardman tubulars over Zipp 404's, and a slight difference with the Ritchey finishing kits.
2. Also cannot justify/explain the $2100 (USD) price gap b/w the two bikes, again, given the difference in specs.

Really was interested in the 9.4 frame only, but unfortunately it seems to be sold as complete bike only (according to Boardman site, Halfords, Wiggle, Echelon). Maybe the frames are not identical in their carbon makeup - does anyone know?

i really don't know anything about these bikes specifically. but SRAM red is lighter than dura-ace; SRAM red cassette is way lighter than ultegra cassette; and i bet the zipps are lighter than those boardman wheels, but i can't find any info on them. 0.8 lbs seems reasonable to me for all of that.

the price gap is probably a lot from the wheels. but also, they "skimped" a little on the 9.4 parts with the ultegra cassette, KMC chain, and FSA crank and BB.

don't know, though. just my thoughts.

It wouldn't surprise me that the 404 firecrest wheels make up a significant part of the cost and weight difference, also the red crank is a bit lighter and more expensive than the fsa. In addition, matte celarcoat weighs MUCH less than white paint (~200g). That being said, Dura Ace kit should be more costly than the Red.
