Fiets, often when I have read your posts, your writing style makes me think of Haikus....its interesting because you really do have a distinctive style.

Luggage scale Walmart $8, hanging from my work stand. Along with getting the weight using this method it also shows you the center of gravity.

Do you have any photos of how your rear front rack setup works? I thought about doing the same thing but didn’t quite know if it would work.

Ye hath asked, so ye shall receive.

It took a little customizing, but it works well. Not shown in these photos are the tubes I later mounted across the rack's struts so I could hang the panniers lower and more to the rear. I have about 2,500 touring miles on this setup, on asphalt as well as dirt/gravel, and it's given me no trouble.

Thanks for the photos and nice job. A little off topic but also weight related as to what you pack on there. I love a large front rack with platform, the reason I went and built my own. Great place for a bulky item without a lot of weight.

My touring/commuting beast in "natural state" runs about 32#. That being heavy duty tires (I sometimes swap for skinnies), two empty racks, two empty bottle cages, pump, small tube & tool bag under saddle, F/R lights, dyno hub. I`ve always known that there were considerably lighter bikes being pedalled on tours, but I have to say I`m surprised by the rather large number of light weights reported in this thread. A little bit envious, but all in all, I really do like my bike. And a special thanks to all of you brave souls with big boned bikes for helping to keep my beloved in the middle of the pack

Both my tourers (one 700c, the other a mountain bike) come in at the mid 30s. The 700c is a bit lighter - maybe 33. But I'd rather have a heavy tough bike, than something pared down too much and less able to handle the rigour of touring. I prefer steel for its ride quality and its weldability (if that's a word), and as such am prepared to pay the price on the uphill. On the flat, I don't really feel the difference.
And anyway, it's a great way to keep fit

It's not 1 gram over everything I carry.....

It's much lighter than it was 20 years ago.....

The heavier it is,the faster I go downhill....

It's so heavy it makes the Earth wobble.....

I really don't know.....maybe 60-65lbs or so,bike and all.

63cm Touring sans everything -> 27lbs

Compact offroad Touring -> 24.5

61cm Vintage Steel Race -> 20.5

The 63cm daily rolls out at 34 lbs. On the same hill with skinny slicks on both a 36-28 "feels" about the same as a 39-25. I don't really notice the weight until I get about 45lbs. However, put some Marathon +'s on there and UUUGGG!!

my bags and gear were about 16 or 17 lbs, so everything added up to about 37 or 38 lbs. I was VERY surprised at how heavy that felt whenever I had to pick up the bike, but I was equally surprised how I never really noticed it when riding. I'm sure if I had taken off the bags during a long climb I might have noticed, but now I'll never know!

I hung my Expedition (31 lbs) and Voyageur (32 lbs) from the digital scale tonight. Both with racks, fenders, big touring tires and cages but otherwise empty.

My stock, size large 2006 Specialized Sequoia Elite weighed 21 lbs out of the box. I switched the wimpy low spoke count wheels for 36 hole Mavic A719's on XT hubs and a mountain cassette. I changed the mid cage rear derailer for a long cage derailer and added front and rear racks and other essentials like lights and tools and such. It now weighs 28lbs. If I could just loose that extra 20lbs of unnecessary fat I'm packing around ...

We don't see alot of European style tourers, looks nice. In the US that would be more of a city/commuter bike with that drivetrain. Is Patria Terra the manufacturer? I googled it and came up with personal photos. :O

I have no idea, given that I'm carrying around an extra bicycles worth of weight it's kind of irrelevant. Maybe 31lbs for the Cross-Check and 35lbs for the LHT when both are carrying empty set of panniers, lock, spare headlamp and batteries.

you know, reading all these weights, and given that my bikes all pretty much weigh about 30 lbs or a bit less, I can only wonder what it must be like to ride a sub-20lb bike. You see often in the roadie section of guys with 16lb bikes....I imagine even a $1500 road bike is under 20 lbs nowadays.

I often wonder what it must be like, and how gearing is affected. I ride in hilly stuff often and I suspect that a 30 granny with a 27 cassette or even a 25 might be doable on a bike that weighs a good 10 lbs less or even 15....

power output vs weight of rider still matters more than weight of bike. 30yrs ago I could go up hills fast and steady, now I go up slow and steady.
