modern set of wheels on your classic bike

Would you put a set of the newest wheels, aluminum, carbon, or wood on your classic vintage bike

If only I had the dough for a nice latter-day steel frame (ELOS, Max, 753, 853) with full Campagnolo Super Record and a *****in' set of Bora's...

Modern as long as that meant aluminum rims, 32 or more ss spokes and silver hubs. I don't see anything in other high tech wheel designs that would provide any improvement for a C&V bike or the type of riding done on C&V bikes. Given that, not much reason to mess with the aesthetics of a classic looking bike with goofy wheels.

Rear spacing sure affects what wheelset you can use on your C&V bikes......especially for non-steel and tempered steel bikes...

What's that mean? I ride my Mexico just like I would a modern carbon race bike.

I have and would again. Made a world of difference on my old Kobe road bike. As long as the spokes are spread evenly around the rim and not grouped together like the super modern wheels, which looks atrocious on older bikes IMO, you're fine.

Riding an excellent wheel from BITD (top o' the line MAVIC clincher rims, 32 DT Swiss DB spokes with a Croce d'Aune hub) compared to my modern Zonda front wheel the difference really is there. Both are buttery smooth rollers, but the weight difference is hard to ignore. BTW, I ride my modern bike just as hard as a vintage one (admittedly not that fast!).

I've got them on two bikes atm.

My Tommasini Super Prestige and my 1991 Chris Kvale.

Pretty tough to beat.

Eh, im not a fan of paired spokes, but rear triplet lacing makes for more even spoke tension so I give it a pass.

Sure, but I'd look for wheels with removable graphics. The Romic above is a good example of what I mean. That's definitely one mean machine and the red script on the rims goes with the build, I guess, there's just too much of it for my tastes.

Yes, I took the decals of my Zonda wheels too. No need to show off.

I think it depends on whether you're looking for contrast or coordination.

Some of the carbons don't look too bad if you get the smalller rims (DA C24, perhaps) or some XXX Lites with the stainless spokes.

Here's a website:
https://www.ghisallowoodenrims.com/

Cycle Smithy in Chicago has one of the best collection of antique bike. I was at his store this morning and the 1901 Pierce Dual-Cushioned Shaft Drive Bicycle had a set of wooden rims! Notice the Pierce has dual suspension and direct shaft drive! Here's his webpage:

Enjoy!
