Lightest Modern Campagnolo Shamal Look-a-Like?

Whenever I see these wheels I drool. I'm obsessed. What is the closest I can get to a polished deep like this without coughing up too much $$ and staying away from a 10lb wheel?

I know I am getting old, but these really don't seem classic nor vintage to me. Maybe the road forum would be a better place to ask? You youngsters get off my lawn but go ahed and answer.

Gipiemme Tecno....
As seen on this competed eBay auction
GIPIEMME TECNO 416 WHEELSET / 40mm Deep V Aero / Campag Shamal / Vintage / Retro | eBay
And here too....
https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1051252/
BTW, I think Shamals had been around long enough to expect to see them on some early to mid 90's C&V bikes.... Don't know about the Gipiemmes, but the styles are so similar, that I would think it could work too....

Classic? Yes. Especially the 8 speed sets I had.

Vintage? Not so much. I ran them on a 1997 Litespeed that I had for two weeks. I sure liked the wheelset more than the frameset.

@op Get your credit card limit raised and buy an original set on ebay. Spendy.

That's a beautiful "classic" Colnago you posted. That scheme is something else.

bikehubstore.com has silver alloy rims in the number of drillings and rim depth of these classics, made by Kinlin. Just mount them up on a set of silver hubs from the same source. People at Weight Weenies forums go nuts over them.

They are. Mine were 8-sp Campy only, which is getting to be about 20 years ago. Bulletproof, smooth wheels on excellent hubs. I'd still have mine if the Japanese market hadn't coveted them so much. I was going to suggest Gipiemme, but was late to the thread. Gipiemme offered blue-labeled versions almost identical in appearance. Campy offered the Shamal and the Vento.

Based on what I saw at NAHBS, aluminum is definitely still a good choice for rims, though with the disc brake trend, there will likely be less to the rims, rather than more.

Great, thanks guys! Those 38mm Kinlins look like they will work perfectly.

This site seems to have the silver. It seems shady at best though. Anyone have any experience with the company?

Robbie,

I had four sets five years ago.

I was picking them up on CL and at our swap meet.

I'm down to a single wheelset of 8 speed Shamals for a rainy day.

...and they are not for sale.

Yet.

...As for lightest?..... The Shamals had always had a reputation for being a bit heavy (they were, of course, selling "aero" over lighteness). I'm not sure you can get that much lighter than the Shamals if you want the same deep V aluminum look, as they will always have similar amounts of material to get the deep V aero profile....

what do you mean 10 pound wheel? those Ergal, rolled tube sew-up rims from way-back are pretty damn light.

those deep V rims just have a lot of excess Al in that V that is not important.

& wire on rims add metal for crochet edges to hold the tire

want light? , step 1, glue on your tires ..

Well put. I don't think anyone that had them worried much about weight.

I believe the Shamals came in tubular versions, as well, but I'm not sure they were that much lighter.

In the late 1990's... ('97?) a bud of mine had a Nashbar version but higher spoke count. Peeled the stickers. Sort of neat at the time and low cost.

Want another version of a Campy rim that looked the bees' knees but weighed in at slightly less than a fully-loaded 747? Campagnolo Atlanta 1996s!

I found an extra 5mph on downhills in the four years I rode those wheels (in Hawaii). I think maybe they had lead cores

However, I must say I find Shamals sexy and would definitely put a pair into use with the Davidson, on which they'd be perfectly PC.

I have Gipieme Tecno 716 rims and they are a lot lighter than my Shamals and you can probably find them cheaper since they don't have the Campagnolo name on them. From what I recall, Gipiemme manufactured the Shamal/Zonda/Vento rim for campagnolo so the only difference is the finish and the branding.

I would pass on that style Shamal, every pair I've seen in person (2) has had rim cracks at the spoke holes.

A couple more

Deep V Rims for Fixie Single Speed Road Track Bike Fixed Gear Bicycle Rim | eBay

H Plus Son 700c 32h High Polish Formation Face 42mm Deep Track Fixie Rim | eBay

I like the look too. I have a wheelset with 7800 hubs and silver 30mm 32h Sun Swifts that look sharp. 30mm rims seem to be more common, cheaper and weigh 100g per rim less.

My Shamals sure looked sharp. I had lots of folks make positive comments, often coming from pedestrians while I was stopped. They would glance at the bike, get fixated on the wheels, and then blurt out: "Whoa - nice wheels!". All demographics from kids to grandmas, the homeless to the office crowd. And many clearly non-cyclists.

The wheels were fast. I used to think that aero was not a factor, but at any kind of mph, these wheels just flew. They were stable and spooky quiet, and they survived pothole impacts that almost took me over the bars.

Anyway, I sold them for more than I bought them for. They were heavy, and had a noticable wind-up effort. I never did enough sustained high-speed riding to justify them.

I would have traded them for the tubular version, for the reduced weight. Plus I needed a 10-speed Campy freehub - my Shamals were 8 only.

Suggestion: if you do find Shamals, avoid the 12-spoke version, especially on the rear. Simply not enough spokes.

If you have enough dough, then Campy Bora's are possibly the best wheels made. Downside: Carbon brake pads and somewhat reduced braking performance.

Maybe not 'vintage' but definately classic! Launched the deep-V concept; the world's first integrated hub-spoke rim system, flattened spokes for reduced drag... and all that over 20 years ago. There is a reason they go for big cash. I was lucky- picked up a set at a swap meet 3 years ago for $300/pair. I got asked how much I wanted for them about 10 times carrying them around at that swap. They look awful nice on my Guerciotti....

My dad has a later 10spd set with the black finish. A touch heavy, but great wheels.

as noted, Kinlin makes a deep rim. H plus son also has the SL42 rim. It's heavy, but that the nature of 42mm alloy rims.

That's sweet.

Wish I were still fast enough to get away with riding those.....

I have an interesting set of Deep V Suns with DA hubs.

I know the op is looking for Shamals, but you guys might get a kick out of these.

I'll post a foto later.
