In the frontier West, these four would already be dangling from ropes...

Not really, I'm thinking much more of the frontier West, which had fewer established cities and employed scarce marshalls and circuit judges. In the South, there was more infrastructure to enforce the laws. That was the idea.
Your edits take the discussion in a more political direction, which I didn't intend. You might want to delete your remark...

Let's keep out the political talk so we don't need to move this thread.

I'm sad there wasn't any U lock justice before the police got them.

Hopefully those guys will have plenty of time on their hands. They should be required to write reviews on each and every bike. A hundred times.

If you read the story, many of the bikes were on vehicle racks, and many of those were locked.

On my last visit to the SD area, I saw it a lot -- people at the gym, their spotlessly-clean SUVs parked in front and a shiny $10,000 never-used bike on the roof rack. The owners were probably inside riding the exercise bikes.

That being said, I never understood why someone would drive to the gym to sit on an exercise bike or walk/run on a treadmill for an hour. If they'd only ride/walk/run to the gym and back home they wouldn't need the gym membership.

I could see it if it were winter in the norther tier or a nice blustery rainy spring day at 35F. Actually, no I can't. I can't stand riding indoors. But at least I could excuse it under really bad weather conditions. The part I don't get is spending $10K on a roof ornament -- for a 4WD that never goes off pavement and never sees snow.

You have to remember it's So. California, the land of granola.....
Meanwhile, back up north, some thieves will go to prison and not have to worry about saddle sores..... but their behinds will still hurt.

Plus, MTB crime family can't get your bike if you drive in to the gym. If you're not carrying your bike with you that is.

Huge difference between MTB riding and road riding. Huger difference between both, and spinning. I find spinning is a very specific kind of workout, and definitely has benefits.
That said, when my hours doubled I dropped my gym membership---if I have a free hour the bike gets me ... not the bike ride to the gym.
I still haven't regained enough overall fitness for serious MTB riding since breaking my collarbone. Legs and lungs might be adequate but the rest of me would get so beat up ...
