Your edits take the discussion in a more political direction, which I didn't intend. You might want to delete your remark...

And the people who lynched criminals without a fair trial are just as bad as the criminals.

Hopefully those guys will have plenty of time on their hands. They should be required to write reviews on each and every bike. A hundred times.

If you read the story, many of the bikes were on vehicle racks, and many of those were locked.

People break into cars and garages to steal bikes all the time.

On my last visit to the SD area, I saw it a lot -- people at the gym, their spotlessly-clean SUVs parked in front and a shiny $10,000 never-used bike on the roof rack. The owners were probably inside riding the exercise bikes.

That being said, I never understood why someone would drive to the gym to sit on an exercise bike or walk/run on a treadmill for an hour. If they'd only ride/walk/run to the gym and back home they wouldn't need the gym membership.

I could see it if it were winter in the norther tier or a nice blustery rainy spring day at 35F. Actually, no I can't. I can't stand riding indoors. But at least I could excuse it under really bad weather conditions. The part I don't get is spending $10K on a roof ornament -- for a 4WD that never goes off pavement and never sees snow.

Been wondrin' about this for decades. Bet they ride the elevator from the locker room to the exercise floor, too!

Ya, we got a lot of that here. San Diego ... the best climate in the nation.....
You have to remember it's So. California, the land of granola.....
Meanwhile, back up north, some thieves will go to prison and not have to worry about saddle sores..... but their behinds will still hurt.

Treadmill easier on their ankles and knees, spin bike might include someone exhorting them to keep working. Or whatever it is they do in spin class.

Plus, MTB crime family can't get your bike if you drive in to the gym. If you're not carrying your bike with you that is.

yeah .... and had no idea angle grinders cut through locks securing MTBs just like they cut through locks securing road bikes .... or cut right through the racks .....

Huge difference between MTB riding and road riding. Huger difference between both, and spinning. I find spinning is a very specific kind of workout, and definitely has benefits.

That said, when my hours doubled I dropped my gym membership---if I have a free hour the bike gets me ... not the bike ride to the gym.

I still haven't regained enough overall fitness for serious MTB riding since breaking my collarbone. Legs and lungs might be adequate but the rest of me would get so beat up ...
