Back in the saddle
Just moved to a ride conducive spot in Dallas and getting back in the saddle after a 10 year hiatus. Feels pretty terrible saying that out loud. Not to mention the 40 pounds I need to shed.
After 24 days at my new place I've put in 17 days of riding and 276 miles. The first few days my mind kept saying "go back home, you can't do this and you might have a heart attack." But I kept on. First few days were the hardest to get motivated.
Now it's turning into a routine that's becoming less taxing, despite putting in more time and miles gradually. Getting my cadence up pretty quickly and averaged 95 over a 62 minute ride yesterday with a max cadence of 142 (I think on a decline in the wrong gear). The hardest part of riding now is keeping energy and leg strength to go further. My top speed is way down from years ago. Saddle soreness getting better.
My body is pretty sore today and taking a rest. Was planning on doing no exercise but after downloading the Strava app I saw some of the TDF riders did 35 miles and 2,000 feet of climbing today on their rest day! Amazing.

2 more posts needed. Got back at it again today and ripped out a 15.6 mi ride on the Cervelo. Average speed 18.3 mph. Avg power 158w.
Signed up for the Tour de Paris 35 mile ride this weekend. Hope I can do it. Grabbed some gu packs, cliff bars, and some nuun tabs for the water bottles.

Congrats and keep at it! You're not alone...
In 2004, I hung up my bike after 12 years of racing, including winning a State Champ title (Cat 3, Crit). I was a new dad, and couldn't train the way I needed to, and also be the kind of dad I wanted to be. I did the dad thing, and took up some hobbies that kept me at home more. In late 2019 - 15 years later - I got back on the bike again, started riding regularly, and made some adjustments to my eating habits. In mid-2020, I had dropped 40 lbs, and was starting to feel a bit like my old self on the bike again. I've had some good months of miles, and some not-so-good ones, but cycling is now part of my life again. At 53, I have zero intent to get back to racing, but I enjoy feeling relatively strong on the bike, and being able to ride at the level of some of my old friends who never stopped. Right now, that new baby is a couple of months away from heading off to college, and my opportunities to be on the bike will get even more open.
