painting over chrome?
I found a vintage chrome fork that I want to use on a vintage mtb. Is there a way to paint it black without having to strip the chrome? I am guessing there is no good way to do it but figured would not hurt to ask.

you have to etch the chrome, then primer then paint

I've painted over chrome many times by just cleaning it with alcohol and painting. It never peels and in fact it pretty hard to remove but when you do the chrome looks brand new underneath if you ever want the chrome look again.

that is why I really don't want to strip or etch it. what paint did you use? thanks

If your not going to recover the chrome latter on then a simple light sanding with 400 grit and a cleaning with a drying solvent like acetone will do. I have done this several times and have successfully used Rustolium rattle can primer and then painted over it with Rustolium enamel.
This fork was in real bad shape, so much so that the Peugeot logo impressions at the top of the fork were eroded. After a close inspection inside and out I did some heavy sanding to get all the rust and chips off. It was not hard and I did a diligent cleaning afterwards. I brush painted this frame with Rustolium enamel and it is holding up really well. I don't do Moutian Biking but my local torn up asphalt roads can do a real number on frame paint. That is why I brush painted it...
