Obscure Tools Part IV JA Stein Freewheel Grease Injector

$35 each shipped in the U.S. I'm willing to ship anywhere if you pay the postage difference. Red ones are sold out.
These are new and unused. I have the plain, red, and black. Be sure to read the instructions in the second photo to determine which one you want. I tried out the "Plain" one with success on Regina, Dura Ace, and Suntour freewheels.

I posted something about this interesting tool (AKA: "The Nose Blower") way back in 2016. Check it out. Cool and funky old tool!

Interesting and not too $$$, if I could figure out which one I'd need for my various bikes. And I wonder what PastorBob would think of this -- he seems to know an awful lot about freewheels.

These certainly don't take the place of a complete cleaning and rebuild for an old freewheel at the Pastor's Freewheel Spa. But for adding some lubrication they seem to work fine. The instructions note that a light grease is required. A heavy grease can gum up the works.

I'm getting one, guessing at which I should choose.

I somehow faintly these a long time ago, maybe one the shops I worked at had one? There's a faint memory of a tube of grease that screwed directly into the port. With the directions mentioning a grease gun, I presume I'll be needing to make that purchase (I have a gun, but full of heavy marine grease for my tractor's mowing deck Zerk fittings).

A Phil grease tube will thread directly into the injector, but it can take a pretty strong hand to be able to squeeze the grease fully through a freewheel. Otherwise, the threaded fitting will also take a standard Zerk fitting, to which a standard grease gun can be applied. That's how I've always used it.

I’m interested in one. If I’m reading correctly, the red version seems to be the most widely adaptable? What is the adapter ring mentioned for the plain version?

I have very little experience with these so I'm afraid I can't tell you which is most widely adaptable. The adapter ring is a flat plastic/rubber gasket that comes with the injector.

Also want one, but can’t seem to decide on which. Either plain or red, as most of mine are Suntour (winner, NW, winner pro), and a smattering of Regina, Sachs and Dura Ace.

What does each of the three types look like from the other side?

Is there a difference in ease of use with/without the “adapter ring”?

Red ones are sold out. I don't have experience with the adapter ring, so cannot report first hand.

Left to right - Plain with adapter ring, Black, Red

FWIIW, the injector won't work with the Suntour Winner Pro, Sachs models with the red ring (mostly 7 & 8-speed), Shimano 600 and Dura Ace, (6-speed), or Shimano DA and Sante 7-speed. These models contain seals which would prevent grease from entering the internals.

Also, if too much pressure comes from the grease gun, there's a chance the seals could be damaged.
