Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2022 Cervelo R-Series (R3) discontinued

Reached out to Cervelo Customer Service regarding the 2022 R-Series. I was hoping for a release date for a 12sp Di2 version.
I received the following...

Thank you for reaching out to Cervélo. At this time we do not have plans to introduce a replacement R-series as it has been discontinued. We recommend you have a look at our Caledonia series. They share close geometries and features.

I was hoping for my 3rd Cervelo and it is not going to happen.
"Close", maybe, but no Cigar!
I do see 11sp R-Series still being available for the moment.
But I don't wish to purchase what is now obsolete equipment and suffer from dwindling parts supply in the near future.
A frameset might be an option, but I'd need to sit on it (pun intended) until 12sp Di2 groupsets become a retail reality.

RIP R3

Yeah, I noticed that a few weeks ago from their web site. It looks like if you want an R or S series, you should expect to pony up for the R5 or S5. I guess their catch-all is going to be the Caledonia.

No it's not, I really really don't want one!
Maybe Cervelo's their new catch all will be Specialized.

I have two R3's that I have used for many years. I wouldn't have any problem switching to one of the other Cervelo frames although I don't have the brand loyalty anymore that I previously had since they sold the company to a big conglomerate.

What don't you like about the Caledonia? Conversely, what about a new R5?

If I can borrow your Credit Card, I'll take an R5 at twice the price of an R3.

As for the Caledonia... To quote Cervelo
"Caledonia doesn’t fit in a box nicely, and we like it that way. It was conceived on our Thursday night rides—routes that often play fast and loose with ‘road ride.’ As we tried to stuff bigger tires into our R5s and streamline our Asperos, a new kind of bike was born."

I want a bike that fits neatly in to the Road Bike box!
I don't want space for bigger tires.
I don't want a best of both worlds.

I just want a road bike that just wants to be a road bike.
I'll pay the Cervelo premium for an R3, even though the R3 is above my abilities, I like nice tools.
The R5 is twice the price, and that forces NBD out... way out!

Now if they made an R5 in Fluoro Yellow, I might have to sell my kids.

I think that I recall seeing that the new R5 has room for 34mm tires, too. Sounds like Cervelo is moving in a direction that doesn't jibe with your sensibilities.

Yeah, I'm with ya - flexibility with [virtually?] no drawback is horrible.

I’d still be on Wolber 18mm, but can’t get them any more.

Ref. R5-CX

Cervelo discontinues the R3 and replaces it with that abomination.
What are they thinking.

I had the same thought. I wonder when Pinarello are going to come out with the Dogma F12 Backcountry.

Kidding aside I guess the success of the R5-CX already speaks for itself....it isn't for me though.

I don’t get that at all. At least the Caledonia has an option for fenders.

The Caledonia has almost the exact same geometry as the R3, so I’m not quite sure what the issue is.

But if you’re dying for an R3, I’ll sell you mine for 4K

Seems as if they are doing something different with the bottom bracket for the R5-CX. Some variation of T47/threaded?

^^^This will be interesting to see unfold. Apparently DA and Ultegra 12 speed will be Di2 only. Big price jump. Will we have 105 manual 12 speed or will that stay 11? Will they continue to offer manual DA and Ultegra in 11 speed or will folks have to go electronic if they want the nicer components? Restricting the "enthusiast" level groups to electronic seems a bigger step than an additional cog.

Cycling is supposed to make us happy. You Knight be taking this too seriously if a company adding clearance for wider tires ruins your Christmas.
