Puegeot Super Competition

Sold sold sold
packed for freeeeeee...
I traded for this locally, the gentlemen who i traded with was a keen Pug guy, he had two of them, this was too big for him, he claimed it to be a 1979 which seems to be accurate based on the online brochures i could find.
he also said it is all french equipment as per the original spec, its a 531 Reynolds frame, i have to say the shifters work very well.

I recently took this bike to E'roica California and it performed well on the 35 mile route, and i have used it for about a year. I have other bikes to build so this one needs a new home,
It comes with a generic black saddle.
$550.00 plus shipping paid by you.
I'm 6ft 1" with a 33 inch inseem and it fits well for me it is a 59cm(corrected) will take pictures with tape measure per requests.
it does not have perfect paint its about a 7.5/10 has a pearly white finish.

...those look to me like Simplex retrofriction shifters, which worked so well they got used by a lot of people mixed with other components, like Campy.
That crank, with those black chainrings, might be the high point of French crank design. It's very nicely equipped, and a good example of the type.

It's nice to see some of them still alive and not parted out.

That's the immortal color pearl that I was thinking of trying for for my 1987 (Super) Competition.

Its a great color, but its the chainset that bedazzled me and the orange dressing, it all works well together, i like it but i cant keep them all, I have a Grandis i want to build next in metallic orange
which sounds awful but its stunning.

Beautiful bike. The parts on this bike are first rate: maillard 700 hubs laced to mavic mod e rims, stronglight 93 crank, simplex retrofriction shifters, and good (aluminum) simplex derailleurs. I have an '82 Supercompetition. This generation bike came with a simplex drop out that is threaded and has a stop so you can run any rear derailleur you want. The nice thing about that simplex RD is that it can handle a pretty big freewheel. It can deal with a larger freewheel than a campy and it shifts well.

You're in South Lousiana. That bike doesn't have a sticker from the bikesmith in New Orleans does it? Bit of a long shot but that is where I worked and it was easily the biggest Peugeot dealer in the region.

No sticker that i have seen, but its likely something you worked on.. i wonder how much these went for back in the day...and where in the hierarchy this bike would have been.

In 1979, wasn’t this top of the heap?

Pretty much top of the heap for Peugeot. I don't remember prices but the top end Peugeot racing bikes went for less than a top end Italian bike. Most folks wanted an Italian bike or perhaps a top end American bike. That said, the Peugeot supercompetition was a race worthy machine with fine parts.

The pearl white paint and graphics on this era of Peugeots were the most beautiful from the company.
These were the Peugeots that attracted me in a big way to the brand in the 80's.
If this bike was a size 54 or 56, I might have seriously considered buying it.
Why they went with the black paint and rainbow color bands later was a big mistake, IMO......

Yes the shifters feel very light on friction but move the rear mech effortlessly...

Hey man.. yep the bike in white pearl with Orange is pretty nice, and the black drilled chain set doesn't hurt either...

The 1979 USA shows the Super Competition as having only half chromed forks: https://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Broc...ompetition.jpg

The fully chromed fork starts in 1980: https://www.bikeboompeugeot.com/Broc...e%20PXN10E.jpg

Looks like there was one model above it in 1980, not sure what the major differences are though. Also the 1980 year came in 58, not 59, so maybe yours is even later than 1980 if its 59.

I went by what the previous owner told me, who seemed to be a Pug expert, also i looked at a brochure and looked to be pretty close, also uncovered what seemed to be a lot of conflicting information on what models Peugeot sold in what countries and what years, so for the purposes of passing this machine on i thought it was adequate, in regards to measurement, it seems that different manufacturers measure in their own way, so whomsoever expresses interest i will happily take any measurements they would be interested in.

Thanks for the information always learning...

Certainly close enough as the models are likely all mostly the same between the late 70s and early 80s. I'm just tentatively interested in the bike so I'm also doing some research and consideration. But yeah Peugeots are notoriously difficult to nail down years and models for.

well i am bike overloaded right now, so make me a fair offer it wont hurt my feelings... i rode the bike at Eroica Cali and i was surprised how much people liked the bike, it rode great even on the small hills my old tired legs did ok,
i would likely get more in parts but this bike is so complete i don't want to break up into component level i'd rather sell to someone who wants the whole thing.

...I feel the same way about the stuff I have here. I honestly don't get why stripping stuff down, selling the frames and components separately seems to be the thing now, but I recognize that it is. I'm glad I started this downsizing a few years early, because it looks like it's gonna be a struggle to sell mine as whole bikes. Thus it will take a few years. I guess the market demographic has shrunk dramatically, as the people who remember these and still like to ride them has given way to the people who want to just buy a new bike from Spesh or Canyon for 4,000 bucks. I am getting some responses on the local Craigslist, but the people who show up know little or nothing about the sort of bikes I'm selling, and seem mostly to be driven by the lower prices.

Sadly it may be upon us whereby us we the older crowd are the only ones who value the older steel bikes... and only if it becomes cool to have an old steelie will they maintain or go up in value... the fixie craze in some weird way probably helped the lower end bikes get reused... alas i think i may have to move some bikes to ebay and see what happens there.

Is that the orange Grandis sold on here a ways back? It has a scuffed down tube or something?

By the way, the completeness of this Peugeot is almost like a catalog photo. Love the crankset.

Gary12000 are you measuring the 59cm c-c or c-t? What is the top tube length c-c?
