Albany NY to Portland ME (after Erie Canal Section)

After plans have been delayed two years, I plan to add my next leg of my piecemeal cross-continent bicycle tour this summer. I have completed a trip from Kansas City to Chicago and from Chicago to Buffalo (Via Detroit, Toronto, Niagara Region). I tent pack and typically eat 2/3 of my daily meals at restaurants.

I feel fairly comfortable following the Erie Canal Trail from Buffalo to Albany, but I am looking for route guidance on the Albany to Portland part.

Look into the Empire State Trail to Poughkeepsie then ACA’s Atlantic Coast route north. It passes relatively close to Portland, ME.

The ACA Atlantic Coast route looks good, but I would rather not bicycle south from Albany to Poughkeepsie just to go North again. Looking for something more direct.

Sorry. Total geography fail on my part.

No personal experience, but this is what Google Maps suggests. When you get to the map make sure you click on the bicycle rather than the auto

I’ve done the climb up VT 30 from Manchester to VT 11 twice. Not killer, but pretty tough. You know you’re in for it when the road becomes two lanes and you see the “Slower Traffic Keep Right” sign.

I’m planning to do some of those other roads in VT this June.
