I selected 69 photos from the nearly 1,000 I took on my recent (Aug/Sep, 2022) bike/bus/train/ferry tour of Ireland. Mostly, I rode on the Wild Atlantic Way in the southwestern part of Ireland and a bit up near Connemara after taking the bus up to Galway.

It seemed that some chance of rain was in every day's forecast. But, mostly, I had sunny days with billowy white clouds. Pretty skies.

I had a few drops here and there in the southern part.

When I went up to Galway, the weather became rainier. It rained the day I arrived in Galway. The day I rode to Leenane was a rainy day with two 30 minute storms of heavy rain.

The forecasts changed quickly. I cut my trip a day short due to rain predictions further north, though, I'm not sure it actually rained. I checked both the bbc and the Irish meteorological weather sites and they rarely agreed. I found the Irish one more accurate. Either way, it was hard to make routing decisions based on one or two day's future forecasts.

Though, clearly, good quality rain gear is a must for riding in Ireland.

I was given that direction from the Warmshowers' host I was staying with that night who said it wasn't a bad road. But, my experience was completely different.

The road, like most in Ireland, had no shoulder and was about as wide as the trucks/lorries that were driving by. There was a lot to traffic in both directions and when the trucks came by, usually trailing several cars, I either stopped and leaned over to let it pass or white-knuckled it as they waited to pass safely. I didn't like it, but the vehicles, for the most part, slowed down to pass safely.

Still, it didn't seem all that safe, so I turned off at my first chance. It is worth noting that I had mapped a much more rural route but went with the more direct National road on the advice of the local.

It got me trying to remember how long ago it was since my own touring in Ireland when I spent approximately 15 months there.

I was surprised to realise that 25 years ago now would likely be a conservative estimate.

Anyway your pics made for some awakening of the grey matter revealing some great memories.

some of the abandoned castle-like homes I see look like they just need a roof to be livable. It makes me wonder why no one restores them. Lovely pictures, thank you.
