Trek 1200 for fitness/rec riding?

Have a line on an early 90s 1200.

Bike would be ridden 99% on paved bike paths for fitness and rec.

Is this bike a good fit for that?

Thanks, Matt.

I say yes.
A lightweight aluminum frame with 3x9 Tiagra gearing is a pretty good all-rounder. I read here it will fit 28-32mm wide tires, which will make the ride more comfortable.

Tires, IMO, are a great way to improve any bike's feel and performance, but the good ones do cost.
Good luck!

I had a 1220 for a bit. It was a solid rider in my trainer and on good paths since I had 25 tires. Give it a go - I recall grabbing mine for less than $200 after it had been gone over by former bike tech - new cables, pads and bar tape. I swapped saddles. Enjoy!

Assuming it fits you well and is in good shape, should be a solid ride.

Would depend on the year. Early 90s trek 1200 might be rsx or rx100 which is early tiagra (rx100) or sora (rsx) however neither group early on came with sti levers. For a fitness or rec bike I would not want to fiddle with downtube shifters and if cheap enough would upgrade with microshift integrated levers. Try it out to check the shifting. Although the frames then could often fit wader tires, my 93 giant can fit 32c cross tires, the rims were often narrow and 25c will already start looking like a light bulb with the tire ballooned out. Unless rims have been changed, probably plan on staying at 25c. Wider only works better with wider rims
