replacement quill stem top caps
I have a Tioga Prestige stem that I'm very attached to. The stem has unfortunately been overtightened in the past, and the top cap (aluminum) has cracked. Browsing through ebay, it seems like the road version is hard to come by. This particular stem is 22.2 (1" steerer) with 25.4 clamp, 130mm long, and no rise. I started to look into having a replacement turned on a lathe, but cost adds up quickly to where it doesn't really make sense. Then I stumbled upon this:

It looks like it should be a perfect match!
Original:
For some reason however, they won't ship to my address. I'm reaching out to them to see if there is a solution, but in the mean time, I figured it would be worth asking to see if anyone else knows of another alternative. I really like these chromoly stems, and would like to keep this one in use!

Not sure why they won't ship to your address. Can they ship to your place of work or a friend's address?

Simworks makes a stem like that. Maybe they'll sell you a cap?

It's a catastrophic failure. I'll post a picture when I get home.

Oh, I should post a pic one day of what some, er, large-ish gentleman did to a perfectly good and quite nice Concept One stem on a Univega Alpina Comp I bought at the thrift store, that someone had turned into a geezer-glider. I almost cried when I pulled it.

Regardless, to bring this post full circle in case someone down the line with the same stem wants to replace or bling it up a little bit, I ended up buying the SimWorks top cap because it was a little cheaper shipped. It works, but I had to use a Nitto stem bolt that was in the parts bin. No issues otherwise!
Note: I am NOT the person who did that to the headset top nut!

It's just a stem cap. In a pinch you could make one from two pieces, a piece of al roundbar that fits inside the quill and al plate cut with a hole saw. Drill the centers of both for the bolt. Slide each on and wrap tape around the bolt to keep the roundbar from falling.
Crude, yes. But all it has to do is anchor the bolt head so you can get your stem bolt moderately tight. 90% of its function is the appeal. (What you got looks a lot nicer.)

looks like corrosion? from dripping sweat over the years? Did the previous owner ride it on a trainer indoors?
Isn't all the bolt's force on the top ring part? The bottom sleeve is just to hold it in place correctly? If so, that's really odd that it fell apart there.
I like the red one, looks good!

thanks!
I had initially considered purchasing some bar to take to a lathe and have it turned down. The cost of the bar made it cost prohibitive. ~$30 for a 12" segment. Really happy this one worked instead.
Yes lots of corrosion in there. Enough in the crack to make me think it had been there for a while. It came from a Diamondback Expert TG frameset that is actually surprisingly clean so I don't know the history. It is an odd failure!

Why do you guys always have to explain the most difficult solution to a problem that's just a few phone clicks away, with the most tools possible? It's not the apocalypse...yet.
