Specialized Sirrus pawn shop find, 87?
Was in the middle driving WAY out to get a pair of tubes for my Fender Deville amp, and decided to check a local pawn shop for guitars. Little did I know a flash of red in the row of probably 30 bikes or more, would catch my eye. Walked up, and it was my size, since I have normal legs and a long torso I am stuck riding larger frames to get the reach right. Only 70 bucks~! Anyway, is this a 1987 model? I tried a search but only found red with yellow graphics or maybe it was white. This one is red with turquoise/white. My phone pics were too small to get a good look. Serial # is GD078435.....

So is it basically an Allez with different decals and components, or does it have slightly different geometry to it? Has a set of Time Criterium pedals on it. It's also odd that I can stand over it no problem, even though it appears huge. The saddle might need to go up a 1/2" or so, and a definitely need my typical 80-90mm stem. In the saddle the bars are WAY ahead of the front axle.,,,,BD
I imagine it seems larger than it really is, given the tight fork crown making the head tube longer.

Same as Allez. At least in 1989 it is. Im sure its the same in 87.
I understand the paint quality isn't as good either.

Yes, from what I have found out, in 87 the Sirrus and Allen were same tubing and geometry. Components were different. Sirrus was 105, Allen got 600.

Good observation about the headtube length being "lengthened" by the shorter fork.
A higher bottom bracket will similarly lengthen the headtube of a same-sized bike, and if this bike's geometry really is the same as an Allez, I imagine that it is on the high side.
How wide of a tire will these bikes take?

I only put 28-32 on touring bikes. Why squirm up the handling on a tight wheelbase sport bike. Just went out in the rain and checked. It has 25c Continental Ultra sports. Uninflated, the front tire is about 1/8" from the brake and fork crown, maybe a tiny bit less. Inflated, that gap will become even smaller. I could probably put a much larger one on the rear, but that would look silly IMHO. Probably will use Panaracer skinwall 23's if I can still find them for a reasonable price.,,,,BD

I have an 89 Allez and 28s were too tall for it so I have some 25s waiting for the rebuild, nice score for $70 OP you might check here for more info

Speaking of...if somebody needs a a replacement for for exactly this model/year Sirrus (red with turquoise "S" panto in crown) PM me. I have one, probably made for a 56cm but a bit longer in the steerer than average for 56.

on the 87, 28s on the front is pretty tight

I used to have a 1988 Sirrus and at that time the only real difference in the frameset of an Allez was that the Allez had a unicrown fork. The lugged Sirrus fork was beautiful - a pleasure to look down on while riding. One of those bikes I regret selling when I thought 3 road bikes were too many - now I have 9!

How can you tell the year...based on the decals some sites would say it is earlier perhaps an 86?

87 was the first year for the Sirrus. They came in red or aqua and white two tone. The decals changed for the 88 models and a different 2 two scheme was introduced.

Sweet, so is it supposed to be a Nitto made bar then? It looks stock, and the stem is WAY too long for me (Specialized branded). No manufacturer logo on either side of the stem. Down on the left drop it has D-002 420mm. 42cm is pretty much perfect width for me, so that is lucky. I just need a shorter stem.,,,,BD

unfortunately I just sold my 87 Sirrus Frame and included the stock bars and stem otherwise I would have sold you this stem.
Mine was a 56 cm bike which is why I sold it

Great information the Siruss, based on the net the earlier decals on BD's some say came out in 86 but according to the information here the Siruss debut later...what year is this one?
