Klein Quantum road bike - approx year and value?
Hi,
I've looked around but can't figure out the year on this one. I know it's one of their lower models, just the plain Quantum. It has a 2x7 105 drivetrain with downtube shifters, Mavic MA 40 wheels and Mavic hubs. Paint is in 8/10 condition with one decent chip on the downtube but clean elsewhere.
Thanks!

Early to mid 90's. My '89 had a custom bracket mounted on the top of the downtube, same location as what you have, is where they installed the shifters, to allow internal cable routing. That went away with the version you had. My '95 Quantum had your design.

Hey, thanks a lot. I'll dig into those years a bit more closely. Any thoughts as to fair value?

I wouldn’t say its one of Klein’s “lower models”…yours was the top of the line road bike at the time—a few years later they transitioned to internal cable routing and split the Quantum line into Pro and Race. Compared to the later models these earlier Quantums like yours were a bit heavier but the ride and responsiveness was still very much there. The fat chain and seat stays are marvelous. Value wise the components are mid-range at best but are consistent, and the color is a popular fluorescent and doesn’t appear too faded (unless its been repainted in which case that drops the price.) I’d estimate $700 on eBay and $500 locally? Others can correct me if I’m off (I’m biased as I have Klein frames piling up to sell.). I should add…it looks like a 55 or 54? If smaller than that the price would drop a bit. Most in demand are the 57/58

Klein had internal shift cable routing late 80's. My '89 Quantum had downtube shifters mounted on a bracket on top of the downtube, the shift cables then fed internally to the derailers. They were a PITA to change and you could not install STI housing stops. My '95 Quantum has the shift mounts on the side of the downtube, where you could install STI housing stops as desired.

While not a big deal the hubs wheel set look like they may be a few years older than the rest of the bike. I would agree on the $500 or so value really nice looking frame and paint. But the components are just OK and not fully matching.

Although $500 should/would be about right,(what I would have said 3 months ago) your price was probably right - now. There have been a handful in the SoCal area that have been listed forever in the $450-$600 range, seems it requires a lot of patience to realize that price. Glad you got what you needed.
