Wanted: 1984 Raleigh USA Bicycle Catalog (Digital)

The internet is lousy with Raleigh USA (and UK) catalogs but one seems to be missing—1984.

I'm especially looking for information on the USA racing models.

Any help is appreciated!

Good luck. I've been searching online for a month without finding anything. A scan of this year has been harder to find than aero brake hoods for the AG250C levers on my '84.

Mark Bulgier has this brochure on his site, marked as 1984:

Hmmm, looks to be missing the top of the line Prestige.

Regardless, thanks for the flyer. Hopefully the '84 catalog is out there somewhere.

Thanks, I have, and those catalog pages are from the ‘85 edition. But, it’s good to have them here for posterity and for the benefit for those using the search function in the future.

Thanks, T-Mar.
It’s a little difficult to confirm that the logo has the yellow “USA”, but I believe you are correct that this could be an ‘84 catalog shot.

Any chance you have the whole spread?

The only differences between 1984 and 1985 are the color of the "USA". Yellow = 1984 / RWB = 1985. Keen Serial Number observers proved that the Competition and Prestige frames were all built in one batch, while the Grand Prix and Super Course had two separate runs. I have a 1984 in my stable, which is essentially stock less bar tape, levers, and crankset. The original Ofmega Mistral, like most I have seen, had some stress cracking, so I upgraded it to Superbe Pro to match the original groupset.

My personal preference but I definitely prefer the yellow accents on the ‘84 Competition and Prestige. A couple of my all-time faves.

I would love to find out as well. Between that situation, and the endless discussions surrounding the 555SL tubing, it's all very mysterious.

Wow, just realized I actually have a copy of the 1984 Raleigh USA Lightweight Racing catalog in my files. Here's the cover and the page on the Prestige. I can scan the whole thing properly when I'm in the office next week:

Good gravy! Do you know what you've been sitting on?! If you run a Google search, there is plenty of evidence to support it being one of the few missing Raleigh digital catalogs, lost forever into the abyss of long gone paper files.

I am certain there are many others out there who would be thrilled to see a full, flat bed scan of that bad boy.

You may even want to pass it along to Kurt Kaminer to add to his robust collection.

Thank you for the Prestige scans, nlerner!

That is certainly going to be of great interest to many people when you get it scanned. I know I'm excited. Thanks!

You’ve been holding out on us nlerner. So many of us have been looking for this catalog for years now and you’ve had it all along.

Thanks for posting it here! Looking forward to the proper scan.

The power of the personal archive! About 15 years ago or so, I regularly scanned eBay for Raleigh catalogs though I was much more interested in the 70s and earlier eras, rather than the 80s. I assume this one came my way at that point, but I’ll do some searching among eBay receipts to see if I can figure that out.

In my day job, I’ve done a good deal of archival research, and while I’m involved in several projects to build digital archives (which, of course, have much easier access than paper), there’s still something really cool to me to hold the catalog in my hands, hence, the amassing of what I have (you’ll see that a few of the catalogs on Kurt’s Headbadge site came from me).

Off Topic 1984 Raleigh UK Framesets & 1985 Prestige Info

This is OT and not meaning to hijack the thread but I found this page from the 1984 Raleigh UK Catalogue on my PC while looking to see if I may have had the 1984 Raleigh USA Catalogue.

I think someone from the UK sent me this back in 2007. These models were pretty uncommon in the US.

The Thin Man point of reference for posterity...

1985 Raleigh USA Prestige with the red/white/blue USA on the top tube...

I just tracked down the eBay receipt for this catalog. I bought it in Oct 2007 from a book seller in NC. It's been sitting in my filing cabinet for the last 14 years! I apologize to all of those who've been furiously search for it over that time. And maybe at some point, I'll own and ride one of the Raleighs from this era. I'm definitely curious.

Edit: This one is for sale locally and has been listed for awhile. Looks fairly original given just one pic and not a bad price for a 531 frame. Unfortunately, too small for me.
