BITD they weren't 29ers, they were 700C mountain bikes. "29er" is fairly recent nomenclature. Specialized also made the Rock Lobster with that wheel size, I believe, and there may be others.

fair enough. i guess it wasn't until...what?...when fisher started putting bikes together with the nano that there were really "29ers", eh?

That's because the 'long-and-low' is the classic XC race position. Bikes like the M2 Stumpjumper, @WimVDD 's Project 20, and (my own) F-1000 are built to be good climbers, and fast on the flats. That's the primary mission of an XC race bike.

I agree, long and low isn't the best for 'bombing down hills' but these aren't DH bikes, they're made for going UP.
Remember, too that these are 26" bikes from the era when 100mm was considered a long-travel fork.

You want upright and comfy? get an 800-series Trek or a Giant Iguana. I tried a shorter, higher setup when i moved in to the 'city' and the bike didn't like it one bit. It made it both hard to steer, and twitchy and unstable once you were in a corner.
I went back to the 140mm/-5* with a 30mm riser bar, threw on some K-Rad BMX tires; Even with lights, a rack, and a mudguard, it still checks in under 25lbs, and it's an absolute weapon as a city bike.

Judy XC? Is it worth fixing one up? I have one that just needs elastomers but those things are pricey

Yus it is a Judy XC, as for if it's worth it to fix it up, it depends.

If you can find a Risse or Englund air cartridge, that's the way to go IMO.

i started riding when 60mm was the only travel. when i got my first mtb, they'd cut the steer tube to nub. of course, that was the popular way. i never liked it even then, though. sure, i could climb really well, but most of the time it wasn't real comfy since most of the time i wasn't climbing. i also wasn't racing, but anyway....a riser bar fixed the comfort level. i had more fun since i was more comfortable. ymmv

I may have posted this before but I just finished getting my '93 Bridgestone MB 1 road ready again. The bike is pretty much stock other than the tires, grips, brake pads, and pedals. I really like the Crank Brothers Stamp 1 pedals, the kool stop pads, and the Schwalbe marathon supreme touring tires. The ODI grips aren't bad either.

I'm gunna need to see more of this Hot. I had one from 94-98, loved and thrashed it. The warranty replacement Chute was awesome and the right bike, but early free ride was done on XC bikes being pushed way too far!

Are those fork boots splatter painted?

That’s the OEM rear tire so I can’t imagine it’s been used much. The front wheel is a replacement, but everything’s straight. It’s a 20” frame, I’m planning a drop bar conversion. Bottom brackets crunchy, that’ll need replacing.
I have most of the drive train from a ‘92/‘93 Canny tourer, the drops with twist grip shifters? I’m thinking it would be a riot to put drops and road twisties on a mountain bike...

Did Suntour make Accushift road twisties before folding and making Shimano pattern stuff? If you change out the shifters for Shimano, the cassette won't want to play nicely. You'll be able to get the shifting on the lower 5 right, but the top two have slightly different spacing.

Good eye. Hot still a work in progress.

Boots have particles of the Macaw tires, which are crumbling; and bits of other colored tires it came in contact with.

I was lucky to find this bike. It had very few if any miles when I bought it. I went to overhaul the bike and stopped when I realized that the original grease had not been contaminated. Those are all original cables and cable housing as well. That bike is pretty much showroom.

I'll overhaul it next spring though just in case.

Thanks you for the heads up, but this is the cockpit I want to install, it’s all Suntour X1. I don’t think I’ll have problems unless the spacing between road and mountain is different, but I think touring and mountain were still using similar stuff?

Actually I should make a new build thread. I was just excited about the old Canny and wanted to get pics up somewhere!

As long as you stay in the Suntour ecosystem, it'll all work together nicely. AFAIK, different cable pulls between MTB and road shifters has only come recently. TBH, I'm not sure why Suntour went with mixed spacing for Accushift, other than to try and exclude Shimano FW and cassettes from their ecosystem.

I've been on a bit of a vintage mountain bike kick lately. I recently rebuilt my 1993 Bridgestone MB 1. This weekend I finished up my 1992 Trek 950. I'm really happy with how it came out. I'm digging the trekking bars and the continental travel contact 26 x 1.75 tires.
