I seldom wear long pants today while cycling, but those metal Terry's trouser hoops were part of my standard commuting attire for many years. Back in the mid-to-late 1960s, when that photo was taken (you can see a 1965 Ford Galaxie behind the cyclist), centerpull brakes did separate middle and higher end bikes from the department store specials (and the tubular-forked Schwinn Continentals from the flat-forked Varsities).

This could have been a picture in Richard’s Bicycle Book if they hadn’t chosen to go with the lovely line drawings, to accompany the passage where he mentioned how bicycles won every race point to point against cars, buses and subways … or was that Tom Cuthbertson’s Anybody’s Bike Book that cited that factoid?

Strange now to think that in the mid sixties there were hardly any bikes for adults. Much less drop bar derailleur bikes. He was a rarity.

it's not exactly an example of commuting, but perhaps more like utility riding...
I've been scanning some of my dad's old photos & slides, and some are from the mid 50's when he was serving in the Army in Germany. It looks pretty interesting, overall, and sure beats fighting the North Koreans at that time.
In any case, it's been fun poking around and looking at the various details in the photo.

The Spanish & Mexicans have a more colorful tradition!
Of the two, the Spanish and Mexican version might be more dangerous, though.

since folks seem to like looking at old cars, I'll offer up a follow-up to the earlier shot of my dad cycling in Germany. This is another shot on the same street, but with a (beer?) truck outside of the gasthof, probably delivering something. Neat truck, but I also notice the abundance of VW Beetles.
