Early 80's (82) Trek head badge adhesive failure

So the headbadge on my '82 Trek 730/736 gave up. Bike was in the car in the heat and I (luckily) found it sliding off when I went to take the bike out. Anyone who knows what they used to adhere these? I assume something like the 3M foam adhesive tape they use to adhere car nameplates but it seems like it was thinner - there's something like a fabric mesh still adhered to the headtube. Better to just drill it and rivet it like the earlier ones? Or were they (more likely) self- threading screws? I have an '83 720 with the same headbadge so I'm thinking of being proactive with that one too. Pics of badge attached. All help very appreciated.

Rubberized backing of some sort.

They used a double sided tape. Try some automotive trim adhesive.

I’d look for a thin auto emblem/molding tape.

My Trek badge is still hanging on, but one side is loose. I have a roll of 3M Auto Trim Tape that I plan to use whenever I remember where I put it.

Badges. Badges. We don't need no stinkin' badges!

3M VHB is my recommendation. This is the same stuff that keeps badges and trim cars. VHB stands for Very High Bond. You have to love it when the product is good and the name is just a name rather than marketing hyperbole.

There are some members here that may know exactly what Trek used.

I used silicone calking about 6 years ago and the badge is still holding on great! After positioning on the head tube , I used painters tape to hold it on . I removed the tape after letting it sit overnight. It survived a winter in Rhode Island! It is now a So Cal bike.

Was hoping for that, as the original held up since '82. Thing with the VHB is (from what I recall) is thick enough to create a gap between the badge and the frame.

Doesn't sound like anyone thinks mounting with rivets or screws is a good idea. I can see the potential for screwing it up. (pun not intended until after I saw I'd made one) I just like the idea of it being permanent (the installation) - stupid prices for ones being auctioned off and they seem to be somewhat scarce. If I had a spare, I wouldn't be so anal about it.

This one lasted 40 years, using adhesive technology that's since been eclipsed many times over. Using one of the suggestions above, you may still want to check it again, and be ready to renew/refresh it, in about 39 years, just to be on the safe side.

Yes, VHB has foam and it is thick. Probably not ideal. I like 3M products, however, on their website are so many solutions that I don't want to pick something out since you only need a few inches of it.

I just grabbed my tube of clear Flexon adhesive off the workbench, for the badge on my 85 Trek 670, It’s not going anywhere now.

The head badges came with adhesive backing from whoever we contracted with to make them (sorry, it's been over 30 years and I just don't remember). Just peel off the paper backing and stick it on the head tube.
