Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

North Cascades Highway - current

I've posted a number of ride reports from this road over the years, and I know it has admirers who have ridden through Washington in the past. Here's a photo of the current conditions at Diablo Lake, Colonial Creek Campground. This is what 700 AQI looks like.

I had no idea the Pacific Northwest was being smoked out right now. Fire season is essentially on hold in Cali., thanks to some unusually early rain.

Where is/are the fire(s)? The last one I remember hearing about in that area was around Newhalem many years ago.

BTW...Is that little store still there?

The fires are everywhere. McAlister Creek is probably contributing the most to the Diablo area, but there are several on Ross Lake, a large one in the Chilliwack near Mount Baker, three large fires at Boulder Creek, another at Three Fools, a large one spanning the border...

I was going to say that Newhalem hasn't changed, but that's not true, it burned heavily about five or ten years ago. Just starting to come back to life. The store is still there though.
