Garmin WindField Live Wind

I've had this data field on my Garmin for years and LOVE IT! It's great for nearly any ride. What new (to me), I just upgraded to the 1040 Solar and while adding WindField I found you can include wind info in the TCX file and see wind information on the summary screen in Garmin Connect (see screenshot below).

Link to WindField on Garmin IQ:
https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/a...9-e365bc849840

Here's an example, I use a small field with just speed and arrow.

Yesterday's ride was VERY windy!

This is useful. Sometimes I swear I face headwind no matter which direction I'm going. This will prove I was right! /s

Against the wind

When you get fast enough, all rides butt up against some wind.

Thanks for the question (sorry I didn't think about it). It's $7, $12 or $30 USD per year ... and there is a free version. I've been happy with the Standard ($7 per year). More information on the options: https://www.windfield.app/Versions

One other afterthought, this data does require your phone is connected to your Garmin and your phone has connectivity. I've done a few rides in remote areas with no cell coverage and you'll get no info in the field or it'll be stuck on the last data without update until you get coverage again.

i don't mean to bash this but i presume this just gets its data from some website and presents the data. i typically look at the wind predictions from NOAA to see how much joy i will have on my way back home from work. it is almost always wrong. the intensity varies greatly and the direction...well let's just say the wind does have a direction but is rarely what the prediction is and almost always in my face.

It is real-time data while your ride and based on your current location. The app is pulling data from the nearest weather station. The frequency and number of stations it pulls from is based on the amount you spend (more $$ gets more data).

Before a ride, I'll check NOAA too. But out on longer rides, I like having the data on my device. On a daily commute it's not super helpful, you're going from A to B. But it can help rerouting if you know there are strong cross-winds on a busy road, you can take the longer route to avoid the stress of getting pushed around near heavy traffic.

Windfinder uses various local airports, weather stations, DOT sites, and wind buoys.

You can see them as all the dots on the map here.
