Win some, lose some...loss

So, I thought this was a good risk on bidding low and who knows...

Dura Ace levers, SunTour Bae ends, Cinelli bars and stem...um...oops

Bar ends are jammed in so hard and the Allen screws are over tightened and stripped...

Which means I cannot get the lever bands off, or the stem to salvage the wedge bolts.

Was going to send @Mad Honk the bars but blech...

Was thinking of cutting the bars to bull horn but then the label as ugly as it is would be upside down...

drill a small hole 2" from the ends, send in a lil lube overnight. I don't think an 1/8" hole will affect much, especially under tape.

Not a bad idea. Problem is I can’t get purchase on the one side due to the stripped bolt.

i was also thinking of drilling the bolt out from the ends. Not sure what the mechanism looks like though.

On my Campy Bar ends the threading is left hand so maybe somebody didn't know that. There are allen style easy outs that may work. Again ,on my Campy ones , I think the hex is a through hole. I just rewrapped the bars on my Mondia and I had forgotten , when I went to remove the bar ends I realized that I was putting too much pressure on the wrench and then I remembered! Doh!! Lucky for me it was prior to stripping the hex.

I have to ask - which way are you trying to turn them? They usually get damaged because people are trying to "unscrew" them, when in fact you need to turn clockwise and screw the bolt farther in to release the compression.

The last post would have been helpful two hours ago! Haha.

I used the Dave method of junk yard mechanical engineering to remove the bar ends, salvaged the stem fixing wedge bolt and threaded wedge. Lost the floating wedge to corrosion.

Bar is saved, bar ends mostly (need a bolt to replace stripped fixing one but the shifters are good if a bit rough. Dura Ace 7400 levers intact. Stem is a carcass but the alloy steerer mech is good.

And Dave gets his rider quality bars.

When you look at uninstalled barcons it's obvious how they tighten and loosen. When installed, not so much.

Exactly right. Still not sure why the reverse thread. Other wedge mechs are regular thread...?

it isn’t reverse thread - it’s just that the bolt needs to go deeper in to the bar in order to release the compression, so you need to screw it in rather than out. Another way to think about it is that you’re unscrewing a bolt by turning the tip instead of the head.

The still functional, but rough and in need of one expansion bolt thingy, ratcheting bar shifters.
