11spd cassette on 9spd hub
Would it work to install an 11spd cassette (Ultegra CS-HG800-11 11-34) onto a 9 speed Ultegra road hub (FH-6500)? I'm converting everything to 11spd but would like to keep the wheelset as is.

Shimano needed to widen the freehub body (lengthen the splines) for the extra cog. Unsure of the actual Shimano dimensions but someone out there will know. So I doubt that an 11 cog set will fit the 9 cog body well, or at all. Andy

An 11 speed cassette would not fit on a 9 speed Ultegra hub because the cassette is too wide for the freehub.

The 11/34 cassette is designed to fit on an 8/9/10 speed freehub body, the same as most Shimano MTB 11 speed cassettes. Road cassettes with less than a 34t largest cog will not fit on a 8/9/10 speed freehub body.

The Shimano Ultegra 11-34 cassette has a different series number (CS-HG800) as comparedto the other cassettes in the series (CS-R8000) for some reason.
Thanks for all of you advice - I'll try the 11-34 cassette on my 9 speed hub and see if it fits and works. The worst that can happen is I'll have to change the rear hub.

As others have posted the 11-34 HG800 will work. No other cassette from the road groups will work.

Another option is an Edco monoblock 11 speed cassette which will fit a 10 speed body. https://edco.bike/collections/monobl...no-sram-11-spd

The Shimano HG 700 and HG 800 11 spd cassettes, only available (when available these days) in 11-34 are specifically
made to fit 8-9-10 hubs or with supplied spacer to 11 spd hubs. The 700 correlates to 105 series and 800 to Ultegra but
except for a few grams weight difference they are the same.
