I really dig the bontrager blender system. I picked up another bontrager stem yesterday for the ritchey. I’m starting to become a vain cyclist I guess. I can’t stand having mounts on my handle bars. It looks awful.
The blender system just makes everything look pretty.

Thanks for the recs on the Varia, may be something I need to seriously consider, especially with integrated camera. I guess my thing is... as others have expressed, I'm never surprised by a car passing me, I always hear them approaching, and the radar seems to merely back that up. Given that it can't predict a last second swerve or a dangerously close approach path, is there any real advantage to it versus just being attentive? I can't glance back at every car to make sure they're not headed directly for my rear tire.

Also, since I haven't ranted about bikes here for a while... I recently replaced my 6800 RD with a new old stock one bought off ebay because I was getting weird skips/jumps on mid-cluster gears in the back, and assumed it was what I perceived to be a bent RD cage. Turns out the cage was totally fine as the new one was identical and I had the same issues.
Pulled the cassette off to investigate, and it turns out my mechanic friend that replaced my freehub a couple months ago put 3 or 4 of the gears on my cassette back on upside down. Turns out the little indents and shift ramps on those gears really do matter. Flipped everything, and back to a perfectly smooth and quiet drivetrain.

It'll pick up cars far sooner than your ears. It'll pick up multiples. It'll give you relative position/closing speed (via indicator dots on the side of your GPS computer display) of up to 8 vehicles - this kind of stuff is pretty helpful for navigating the typical street debris/obstructions. It also changes the tail light flashing pattern when it senses an approaching vehicle. Oh, and here's something I'd posted recently in another thread -
A Varia makes it more practical for me to adopt a default lane position that's further left, which generally puts me on smoother pavement with less debris. That position also makes me more visible than FRAP. I also believe that, seeing me move over upon their approach, drivers tend to understand that I'm aware of them and that I'm being accommodating and respond in kind; I've had FAR fewer close passes since getting a Varia.

Well, those nightmares from yesterday? Likely the end in a string of issues that exactly match her nightshade issues, starting with eggplant Friday and Saturday, then some potato chips (natural, but doesn't matter...) Saturday and Sunday, and looking and feeling out of it from Saturday through yesterday. And yes it sucks.

I felt the same way, I didn’t think I needed one. My aunt gave me some money for my Birthday last year, and I bought one. I hate riding without it now. June and July I did a lot of cycling in Charlotte, and I didn’t have any of my gear with me, Varia included. I hated it. Felt naked.
The varia just eases my mind, it’s nice knowing when cars are coming, especially on some of the back roads between Richmond and Willyburg.
One last thing, crashing my brand new madone last october was a direct result of not having a varia. I heard a car coming and looked over my shoulder, ran into the work stand a couple seconds later. If I had the varia my eyes would have stayed straight ahead.

It's been explained/taught in cycling safety classes for years and years that you can't dodge a vehicle approaching from behind.
Not even with a Varia, mirror or whatever. John Forester told us that in his book, Effective Cycling. IIRC. the Varia is good for ~500' and a car approaching at 60 mph is doing 88 FPS, so that means that you'd have to be aware of the Varia beep or by sight, look over your shoulder or check mirror, take diversionary tactics, all in 5.7 seconds or less and that's assuming the car doesn't do a last second sideways maneuver. Sorry, ain't gonna happen.
That's my A&S rant for the day.
BTW, I was hit a few weeks ago by a truck's mirror on a 55 mph road. I have a Varia and I was aware of a car approaching from behind. Didn't help.

Hell, it's what drove my great, great grandparents out of The Old Country.

I was going to mention the QR cam on the front brake being open, even though the pads look really close to the rims, but when you mentioned the cable routing - I can't even figure where the cables are routed? Where the hell is the RD cable going?
