Actually, what's funny is that I think my very first Campy part was a set of wheels with either Chorus or Record hubs. And I put it on a Miyata. Single speed. Lol...quite the sacrilege. I don't think I owned another Campy part until I got my beat up Gitan TdF (like 10 years later) and it actually had a set of tubbys laced to some very nice Campy hubs, and they spin remarkably well. Now I've got the Trek 957 with full Campy Super Record. I still think I'm going to build up my junk Paramount frame with Tourney instead of Campy just to have fun and mess with the grouches...can't take life too seriously, ya know.

Some Campy stuff is great. I hear the Valentino is really where it's at, though. If you are going friction, Suntour FTW...except their unobtanium tension springs.

Have bought a few choice pieces when they came up in exceptional condition and or a good price.

I do find it entertaining when the drill down becomes fanatical and justification for the $$$ ratchets up as it often does.

I can usually find a good enough one for my use, the Strawberry was an excellent example, all of it was usable and will do just fine despite having a few bits with the chrome gone, they all are functional and work just fine for my meager use.

Plenty of worthy substitutes but the Campys are not really the poor part they're made out to be IMO.

If you lube them and the SP is proper size for the frame, clean, good fit, etc, they can work just fine.

Any over tightening, especially with under size SP can spell doom if the female side is not ground or trimmed down.

The shoulder on the male side will bottom out and "oh snap", you have another spare female part you don't need and can't use.

They do seem to be weaker than most others but common sense and proper wrenching can easily save you from yourself.

I have a few Campagnolo out fitted project bikes that I have been studiously ignoring, because I know its a whole 'nother rabbit hole.

I was the able to hold the line against France for a number of years as well. There have been lapses. Awhile ago I bought a frame mainly for the French threaded Campagnolo headset.

I am also cautiously aware of the little bits of Campy sprouting from a few mechanics specials I've found, and the 1/2 dozen orphan wheels with Campy hubs... There's a seatpost tucked away some where, and the partial Mirage group from the scrap yard.....

When I built my NOS '90s Pinarello frame I chose all Campagnolo to keep it Italian (except Mavic rims). The lowly Veloce 9sp works flawlessly, but so does my 105 7sp ...

I have one project I'm deliberately but slowly, VERY slowly, collecting mid-80's Super Record parts for, anything else I have with Campagnolo is purely unintentional or the result of a killer deal. It's pretty decent 1984 Guerciotti GLX frameset with a Ten Speed Drive prepped frame. The bike originally came with a full Super Record group and was marketed as the "Super Record Special" so my OCD won't allow anything else. I still have a few pieces to get, brake levers being high on the list but OUCH are they pricey if they aren't all scarred up!

Unfortunately my OCD and wallet are more often than not in direct conflict. Of course if I would focus on one bike at a time and not try to juggle multiple projects simultaneously that might help but, where's the fun in that?

Ahh yes, Campag-itis. I have managed to avoid the infliction even though I have had some bits fall into my lap. Mostly parts bikes with the bit or bob on them. If I slightly covet anything anything Campy it’s hubs and skewers. Both seem to be highly regarded and just work.

Suntour….SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!

I know I am infected and have been since the '70s. Just can't recover.
I was open when the Pinarello joined the stable as it had DA 740x 8v parts except for the HS which is Campagnolo. Ran great, no complaints until the retailing feature on the FD broke.

As purchased.

After several K miles, I just couldn't take it anymore and replaced it with Chorus but still DA rear block with Wheels Mfg. spacers.

This was after we moved to a location that doesn't have the trails and is too far from work to commute with it. Fell out of shape and decided to start looking for triple parts. Also found a good deal on a Record 8v cassette hub so now the launch was on. A BF'r sent me a TI cassette hub to convert to 9v, of which I had already. Then the acquisition of parts started. Took severla months fo find decent priced items. A broken RH 9v Record Erto was found on the bay donating parts to convert a 10v Ergo that was rebuilt for the De Rosa.

So now the HS is not lonely and is in good company.

BTW both the DA and Racing T shift flawlessly.

The DA parts ore going on my daughters Pinarello. Both the hubs had pitted cones which are near unobtainium.

Valve grinding compound, low speed drill, new balls, oldschool thick auto axle grease and very light or no preload then limited use, maybe very limited.

Of course not ideal but maybe ok.

Mark the cone where the damage is on a place that you can view when it is assembled. When you put the wheel on the bike, have your mark face "up". Since the cones don't rotate when you ride, most of the hard work is being done by the portion of the race facing down. Should buy you a few more miles.......

I miss the ebay seller from Poland with all the mutilated pantographed and drillium Campagnolo groups. At the rate he was grinding them out, I think it was creating a shortage or at least helped push the prices higher for the good stuff.

What is the Campy virus like? I hear it's insatiable.
It's making my OCD nuts looking at it on a crappy headset...
Some of us can avoid infection, with others all it takes is one Campy spacer. Fortunately there are programs and support groups. BF has changed my life.
