Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

decent start to the year, but was very slow on my most ridden, 21 mile climby loop. not sure if it’s wind direction, wet roads, or just getting slower!

also, what is this thread about 😂

You could always squirt a couple ounces of tubeless sealant in it and maybe you won't even have to stop for the next puncture.

In the tube. That's the beauty of tubes with removable cores. Drawback is you'll probably want to toss the tube after a couple years of tubeless goop build-up if you're re-upping every 4-6 months.

I had a Road Morph explode its own head. So, there are other failures.

It's about a day old.

In spirit it's like a decade old. I'm too lazy to dig up the exact number.

I don’t drink much or often, but mrs datlas opened a bottle last night and the three of us shared it. I don’t think I felt the least bit tipsy, but the wine tasted fine.

I learned later that the wine, Moscato, has HALF the typical alcohol concentration of “normal” wine.

Whyfi comes to the burg, we instantly get polar like conditions.

Whyfi leaves the burg, we instantly get spring like conditions.

I haven't looked at Moscatos much but a lot of them are pretty low, the highest I saw was a 9%, which is approaching "normal" wine content.

You had better luck than me. First thing I discovered was that Crystal Springs Road through Hillsborough had multiple DEEP pools of water the entire width of one or the other lane of traffic, which required lucky timing, or understanding motorists behind you. I had both.

Then, at Polhemus and Crystal Springs, I discovered that Crystal Springs was closed beyond that point. "No sweat!", I thought, "I'll just ride up Polhemus to the Ralston Trail!"

Then, at the trailhead, I discovered it was closed. I BRIEFLY considered taking Ralston to Alameda, Alameda to Edgewood, and Edgewood to Cañada Road. Then I remembered reading Edgewood was closed at some point between Alameda and 280.

So I turned around and headed home, back through all the puddles and mud on Crystal Springs. Two miles from home, while thinking about chucking the bike in the Dodge and driving over to Edgewood and Cañada, I was taking a turn and the bike got distinctly squirmy. My front tire was soft. I stopped, and picked 3 pieces of embedded debris out of the tread, and got out my mini pump, and started the long, laborious task of trying to pump it up enough to get home. Just then, a guy across the street, in his driveway putting bikes into (or maybe taking bikes out of) a pickup, while wearing cycling kit, offered me the use of his floor pump! That got me home.

Once there, I looked at the bike, which looked as if it had been hosed down with sand, and my clothes, which looked similar, and decided the best use of my time would be washing the bike and my clothes, and doing a virtual ride later in the day.

Upon sober reflection, I think it's just possible that there may be better uses of my time than trying to ride a bike after an historic deluge. At least I got in 13.3 IRL miles to start 2023.

ouch! There were some rockslides blocking the bike lane up conzelman and a lane of the road in a few spots; the upper part was gated off from a larger slide, but still only one lane. Lots of rocks on the road. One tree limb, lots of puddles, but no cars. Pretty nice morning otherwise - https://imgur.io/a/l80Fo3F
