After an unusual January thaw allowing a metric century last month, I got out and put February's in the books today. I guess we shipped our snow out east this year. Temps in the low to mid 30-s while I was out. The wind that I'd figured from the east was actually southeast, so my north then south out back route was more challenging than I'd expected. I'd love to do full centuries this time of year, but there's a slow draw down of your body heat despite all the gear, which I can take for no more than 4 hours.

My only photo, exhibiting my lack of photo skills at temps around freezing.

Downtown Stillwater?

We were on the fat tire bikes on a friend's farm nearby in scenic Scandia.

Yep, the standard Stillwater bridge photo.

I went up to Scandia as my halfway point. I noticed several road bikes at the Chillicout cafe in Stillwater on my way north, they were gone when I came back south. Didn't see another rider (actually riding), all day. A fattie is on the agenda as a summer purchase.

This was yesterday actually. I knew the snow was coming so I took time off work Friday to get a ride in. I rode north on the beautiful – if short – highway out of Kodiak. Temps were 28° F dropping to 26, but the winds gusting over 30 mph were most challenging. That, and all the dust and dirt on the roads. To the end of the highway and back was just over 25 miles, with elevation climbing from sea level to about 300 feet and back, several times. Lots of great scenery. I'm sure it will be really spectacular come summertime when everything turns green.

Monashka Bay

At the end of the road.

I rode a 300 km brevet in Corona California on my 1991 Sancineto. Here is the view at the 6:00 am start with 50 riders or so! Kind of a cool day with temps only in the 60's

Aliens! I just knew they were among us. I hope you wore an alloy foil hat.

Our activities today didn't involve bicycles. FWIW, the temperature was about 5F. A lovely day.

I got out for my first metric century of the year... which ended up being 66 miles with 4100 feet of climbing. The day started out pretty bright and not too cold, and though it didn't get better it didn't get much worse either.

Up here in the NH mountains, we've been getting buried in the white stuff. The skiers (I'm not one) are loving it. But us bikers have to resort to other pursuits.

So, on Friday, I did a metric century on this---

It actually belongs to Mrs. PB. She bought it on a whim last year after she retired. The only thing is this rocket powered sled is too fast for her!

However, there is bicycling hope for me! I leave for Miami Beach a week from today. I'm taking my new Dahon folder with me. Come here sunshine!

Nice ride, Bob! What kind of brifters are those?

rhm, nice going. It's good to see that at least one of us is still out riding. That would simply be impossible here. What bike is that? French stem? High-flange hubs? Very classy.

Ah, could and should are different words, different ideas. Prolly wouldn't work too well.

That's the Allegro Special I got from BBM at the end of the summer. Rather than hijack this thread, I guess it's time to update that one.

First, I took the new "fast" CX bike with slicks up a short but brutal climb, got a flat halfway up and decided to head home. Then I got the "classic" MTB beater more buttoned up("new" stem and front shifter yesterday, rear brake today) and took the gf's son out for his first muddy MTB experience. He's hooked. (doesn't look too wet in the pictures, but there are parts of that park that are mostly clay in the soil and don't drain well at all which had a few inches of standing water)

@AlTheKiller, fantastic! My nephew (38 y.o.) took me (57 y.o.) out for my first REAL MTB ride (in a MTB park with real MTB trails) in December, and now I'm hooked! Good for you for introducing a young person to a great sport. BTW, I could not keep up with my grand nephew (10 y.o.). He put me in a world of shame!

Beautiful spot in your pictures. Since I'm buried in white I'm enjoying your green.

I'm far from an actual MTBer. hence the old rigid bike on balloon tires meant for city streets But I do okay on these easier trails, and can keep up with the 9 year old just fine It's actually my first bike without drop bars in my adult life, and I treat MTBing more like hiking on wheels, compared to your modern breed of "shred the gnar" types. Definitely wished for some off road tread at the slippery parts.

Enjoy some more green in this album:

Napa, California. Where our freezing days are in the high fifties and our intense heat days are in the low eighties Slight exaggeration as we have some outliers, but that's pretty much the average. Only downside is the landscape is more gold during Golden state summers, rather than green. But here we have the luxury of vineyards *everywhere* which stay pretty green.
I can't think of many places which are as comfortable for riding year round.

Hmmm...Napa, Provence, Tuscany...it seems great cycling and great wine go hand in hand. Coincidence, or part of some divine plan?

To be honest, I'm pretty sure that good wine can be grown and produced nearly anywhere. It's just that winemakers prefer living in picturesque, perfect temperature/humidity areas, so these regions have stuck as good wine regions

75 miles of mostly dirt yesterday, with 4K ft of elevation gain. For whatever reason I picked a day with super dry and hot santa ana winds (gusts up to 50mph.) Oh well, I survived! First RUSA permanent ever in the books.

Nice pics Whatwolf, I am very jealous. I would take those hot Santa Ana winds over winter storm Neptunes 60mph wind gust that are coming tonight. I got a quick, frigid 10 miles on the Stumpy.
