130 road hub build wheel for Trek Antelope
I have an old Trek Antelope. Could I build a rear wheel with an old 130 Tiagra hub and put a 9 speed group on it? I understand old mountain 7 speed and road are both 130mm spacing? I have some old parts and am looking to build a gravel bike.

You don't have to guess. Simply remove the rear wheel and measure the rear spacing measuring from the inside face of one dropout to the inside face of the other. Don't build a wheel until you know what your rear spacing is. I have an old GT mountain bike from 1998. It was originally 7 speed. It has 135mm rear spacing

Measure? 135mm has been the standard for a long time till thru axles came along, effectively from when hyperglide cassette hubs came along, which were common by the late 80's, the age of your bike would help, but without knowing the specific of this, measure, as that will give you a definitive answer,

Trek "Antelope" is a term used for several different models of TREK's.
They would basically pick a model each year (usually? one of the 800 series??) and call it an Antelope.
Spacing depends on what YEAR.
Around 91-92ish, it seems they were around 128-130mm.
MEASURE. It's simple. If you don't have a metric scale, convert. 2.54mm/inch.
To kind of answer your question- If it's 128-130 I'd use the 130 hub. I'll "force" the stays 2mm apart and not worry about cold setting or drop out parallelism. More than that and.......?

It is a 7 speed 1990 model and according to Sheldon Brown's site it should be 130 but I will measure. I could just buy a cheap wheel. A lot of cheap bikes are still using 7 speed gear. Basically, I am trying to put together a gravel bike for occasional trail rides. 99% of my riding is road riding on pavement.
Thanks

I suggest using the bolt method over the 2x4 method. I’ve done it and it’s really easy.
