Curious as to how many miles per bike in 2021

So, woke up early this morning and I was bored. So I downloaded my 2021 info from Strava, sorted the spreadsheet per bike, added up the distance, converted it from KM to miles, and recorded. Some rounding up of tenths of a mile so it may be a tad off. But looks like I rode 28 different bikes this year for 4237 miles. Even though the Azor dutch bike has some miles assigned to it the reality for that one is it had a lot more miles on it just running errands where I didn't track them.

Trek Y-Foil 373 miles the most miles

Giordana Xl Super 113 miles

Greg Lemond Team Z 151 miles

Girodana Superleggera 107 miles

Allsop Powercurve Softride 37 miles

Pinarello Monviso 149 miles

Schwinn PDG Paramount 146 miles

Paletti 128 miles

Fuji Opus III 121 miles

Olmo Sanremo 50 miles built up right before winter weather hit.

Ochsner SL 7 miles Sold this year

De Rosa Neo Pro 230 miles

Greg Lemond Maillot Jaune 75 miles

Klein Quantum II 137 miles

Kirk Fishlips 258 miles

Kona Jake the Snake 79 miles Sold This Year

Pashley Guv’nor 259 miles

Wayne Evans 278 miles

Duell Vienna 277 miles

De Rosa Nuovo Classico 25 miles Sold This Year

Davidson Impulse 264 miles

Custom Lemond GP&GS 184 miles

Serotta CSI 210 miles

Cannondale CAAD8 Optimo 156 miles

Azor 30 miles

Miyata 914 se 25 miles Sold This Year

Trek 5200 158 miles

Schwinn 684 65 miles Sold This Year

Anyway, at least this verifies that they all do get used. Didn't have any at zero miles for the years. Some were lower that I expected but that's because I am slow to fix mechanical issues because there's always just another bike to take out. And now...back to my coffee.

Schwinn Superior = 3050

Ciocc Designer 84 = 0

Battaglin Cromor = 0

Need to spread the love around (and build some wheels for the Ciocc)

I do this every year, but with paper and BikeJournal.com and a Google doc to prevent a single source from losing all my records (like a hard drive crash did years ago ):

1988 Diamondback Ascent: 1702

1987 Bianchi Sport SX: 932

Having only 2-3 dedicated riders makes it easier to track this stuff.

Yep, mine goes 3 different places. But with Strava you can request your data and they send you a link to download everything in spreadsheet format. Then you can save off the spreadsheet and manipulate it however you want.

I use a Week-At-A-Glance pocket calendar. I have them back to 1988. I’ve been putting the data in a spreadsheet since then (Lotus 123, back in the day) and have a bike list that includes all the mileage from every bike I’ve owned since then.

This year:

2006 Salsa Las Cruces (retired) : 208

1998 Moots YBB: 82

2010 Dean El Diente: 355

1998 Nashbar Flashback: 158

2004 Specialized S Works Epic: 35

2010 Cannondale T1 touring bike: 1312 (around Lake Michigan)

1999 Dean hardtail: 273

2005 Specialized S Works (Tucson bike): 52

2003 Cannondale T800: 587

2010 Cannondale Tandem: 119

The T800 and Tandem are new this year.

As long as we’re tabulating oodles of info, it seems like elevation should be included. Seems almost as relevant as miles in some cases.

I can't believe I just added all of this up, but I'd been curious about this very question, and it was a neat way to look back on the year.

1972 Raleigh Super Course: 34 rides 291.1 miles 25,144 ft

1971 Raleigh International: 25 rides 241.8 miles 22,526 ft

1986 Miyata 610: 16 rides 140.7 miles 15,043 ft (sold)

2006 MountainCycle Stumptown: 10 rides 109.4 miles 10,646 ft (bought)

1999 Soulcraft Option3: 8 rides 46.1 miles 4,491 ft

2008 Titus Motolite: 7 rides 86.6 miles 9,313 ft

2001 Soulcraft Groundskeeper: 7 rides 76.3 miles 7,231 ft

1987 Specialized Hardrock: 4 rides 25.7 miles 2,963 ft (given to friend)

So, 112 rides, 1,025 miles, and 97,991 feet. The majority of those miles and feet going to a pair of 50 year old Raleighs! Those riding apps track so much data these days, it'll make your head spin. Next year we'll be able to report riding surface!

1987 Marinoni: 715 miles, 32 rides. It’s been wearing 650Bx38’s for most of the year.

1979 Miyata: 313 miles, 14 rides

Haven’t bothered to collect feet climbed data, but many rides are about 1000’. Not surprising in hilly Seattle.

I don't have any devices set up to record elevation, but you could get an idea by checking my location.

CID, is that Iowa? Pretty flat, I guess. But that info would still be interesting. I use RideWithGPS. It’s free and has all sorts of cool features, including elevation.

The surprise take-away from my stats is that I did the most climbing on my heaviest bike, and it’s also the only one that doesn’t have a triple!

8882 miles total for 2021, spread out over 8 bikes

Touring bike built by Rich Powers: ------ 3072 miles
Sport bike built by Gordon Borthwick: - 1342 miles
1982 Olmo Competition: ---------------- 907 miles
1974 Raleigh International: ------------- 603 miles
1982-ish Raleigh Team: ------------------- 857 miles
1987 Hetchins M.O.: --------------------- 946 miles
Bacchetta Giro 'bent ------------------- 316 miles
Bacchetta Carbon Aero 'bent: ----------- 839 miles

The touring bike is equipped for bad weather and darkness, and can carry stuff, so it gets used quite a bit. The Borthwick has fenders too, so it gets used in bad conditions too.
The Hetchins has low gears, so it can go up some steep grades.
The rest of the vintage bikes have the classic 52-42 chainrings and 13-24 freewheels, so no steep hills!
The 'bents get used as cross-training, to some degree, plus just to maintain the specific 'bent skills.

It's enough work to keep these bikes all up and running. I can't imagine doing that for many more bikes!

i don't keep track though most of my road miles were on my Waltly Ti bike. Perhaps I should in 2022. I definitely have more than a few bikes that got zero miles in 2021. Those are on the short list to move along.

I have no idea since I don't track mileage.

But most of my miles have been on my new to me Ritchey Breakaway, next is the Centurion ProTour "zero" bike that I did two short credit card tours on, then some miles on "Big Red", a 650b conversion from a mid-70's Raleigh Competition. A few other bikes got a day or two in each.

I typically stick with one bike until it needs some mechanical work, then pick another, etc. until they all need work, then it's a few days of busman holiday.

The Project KOM-10 was my go-to bike this past year. My odometer crapped out a few times on me, but I probably accumulated about 2000 miles. My road bikes saw significantly less use, because so much of my riding was shopping with panniers. If I wanted to go for a fun ride after a shopping trip, it was simplest to unclip the panniers and keep using the mountain bike, which also currently lives in the house, rather than hanging from the garage rafters with the rest. Besides, 26x1.95 knobby tires provide a good workout. When I got on the 1959 Capo for our city's second biennial Cyclovia event last weekend, I felt like Superman.

YES - someone finally asked for my anal-retentive data! I use ridewithgps but don't always record my rides, sometimes I just calculate their distance via googlemaps or they are a known commuting distance anyway. I keep track in a google sheet. Not only do I record mileage, but I split it up into business or pleasure so I know how much I commute ( I also then calculate how much I have saved in gas costs, credit given by IRS, cost of ownership according to AAA - I did say I was anal retentive).

I also keep a running tab on how many miles each bike has been ridden. I found some very interesting statistics since this started in 2017. When I was using it for commuting, my Ross got way more miles that I thought it ever would. I also need to spread the love around to my other bikes - they are not supposed to be collecting dust.

I do need to keep track of elevation...

I've kept track the past two years and never totaled them up. This was interesting:

2021 Totals
1986 Raleigh Aleyska 1756.5

1986 Panasonic Touring Deluxe 787

1973 Raleigh Superbe 762

1960 Robin Hood Sports 418.7

1996 Burley Duet Tandem 203.1

1963 Schwinn Racer 43.7

1936 Curry Tourist 31

So my total on 3 speed bikes last year was 1255, that surprised me, but it's a lot of my work commuting plus the Lake Pepin 3 Speed Tour.
